On this day in Royal history . 24th March 1603 . Queen Elizabeth I died . . Part ½ . ◼ Queen Elizabeth I, daughter of Anne Boleyn & Henry VIII, died at Richmond Palace at the age of sixty-nine. She was the third of Henry’s children to be monarch but reigned for far longer than her siblings, ruling for 44 years & 127 days. . ◼ Sir Robert Carey, Earl of Monmouth, & grandson of Mary Boleyn, recorded Elizabeth’s last days: . ▪️ On Wednesday 23rd of March, she grew speechless. That afternoon, by signs, she called for her council, & by putting her hand to her head, when the king of Scots was named to succeed her, they all knew he was the man she desired should reign after her. . ▪️ About six at night she made signs for Archbishop Whitgift & her chaplains to come to her, at which time I went in with them, & sat upon my knees full of tears to see that heavy sight. . ▪️ The Queen lay upon her back, with one hand in the bed, & the other without. The bishop kneeled down by her, & examined her first of her faith; & she so punctually answered all his several questions, by lifting up her eyes, & holding up her hand, as it was a comfort to all the beholders. On This Day In History . 7 September 1533 . Queen Elizabeth I was born . 👑 Elizabeth I was Queen of England & Ireland from 17 November 1558 until her death. Sometimes called The Virgin Queen, Gloriana or Good Queen Bess, the childless Elizabeth was the fifth & last monarch of the Tudor dynasty. She was the second child of Henry VIII of England. Her mother was Henry’s second wife, Anne Boleyn. . About the birth; . ◼ After her coronation, Queen Anne settled into a quiet routine at the King’s favourite residence, Greenwich Palace, to prepare for the birth of her baby. . ◼ The child was born slightly prematurely on 7 September 1533. Between three & four in the afternoon, Anne gave birth to a girl, who was christened Elizabeth, probably in honour of either or both Anne’s mother Elizabeth Howard & Henry’s mother, Elizabeth of York. . ◼ The birth of a girl was a heavy blow to her parents, since they had confidently expected a boy. All but one of the royal physicians & astrologers had predicted a son for them & the French king had already been asked to stand as his godfather. Now the prepared letters announcing the birth of a prince had an ’s' hastily added to them to read princes[s] & the traditional jousting tournament for the birth of an heir was cancelled. . ◼ At birth, Elizabeth was the heiress presumptive to the throne of England. After he had continued long in prayer, till the old man’s knees were weary, he blessed her, & meant to rise & leave her. The Queen made a sign with her hand. My sister Scroop knowing her meaning, told the bishop the Queen desired he would pray still. He did so for a long half hour more, with earnest cries to God for her soul’s health, which he uttered with that fervency of spirit, as the Queen, to all our sight, much rejoiced thereat, & gave testimony to us all of her Christian & comfortable end. . By this time it grew late, & every one departed, all but her women that attended her.
