On This Day In History . 7 September 1533 . Queen Elizabeth I was born . 👑 Elizabeth I was Queen of England & Ireland from 17 November 1558 until her death. Sometimes called The Virgin Queen, Gloriana or Good Queen Bess, the childless Elizabeth was the fifth & last monarch of the Tudor dynasty. She was the second child of Henry VIII of England. Her mother was Henry's second wife, Anne Boleyn. . About the birth; . ◼ After her coronation, Queen Anne settled into a quiet routine at the King's favourite residence, Greenwich Palace, to prepare for the birth of her baby. . ◼ The child was born slightly prematurely on 7 September 1533. Between three & four in the afternoon, Anne gave birth to a girl, who was christened Elizabeth, probably in honour of either or both Anne's mother Elizabeth Howard & Henry's mother, Elizabeth of York. . ◼ The birth of a girl was a heavy blow to her parents, since they had confidently expected a boy. All but one of the royal physicians & astrologers had predicted a son for them & the French king had already been asked to stand as his godfather. Now the prepared letters announcing the birth of a prince had an 's' hastily added to them to read princes[s] & the traditional jousting tournament for the birth of an heir was cancelled. . ◼ At birth, Elizabeth was the heiress presumptive to the throne of England. On This Day In Royal History . 7 September 1362 . Joan of the Tower died . Joan of England (born.5 July 1321), known as Joan of the Tower because she was born in the Tower of London, was the Queen consort of Scotland as the first wife of David II. . 👑 Joan was the youngest daughter of the king of England, Edward II & his wife Isabella of France. . ◼ Due to the Treaty of Northampton, Joan was married on 17 July 1328 to David II of Scotland at Berwick-upon-Tweed.  Joan was seven years old, David was only four. The marriage lasted 34 years, but it was childless & said to be loveless. . On 7 June 1329, Robert I of Scotland died & David became king. He was crowned at Scone Abbey in November 1331. Joan became Queen consort. . ◼ After the victory of Edward III of England (Joan’s brother) & his protégé Edward Balliol at the Battle of Halidon Hill near Berwick-upon-Tweed in July 1333, David & Joan were sent for safety to France. They reached France in May 1334, where they were received by Philip VI, her mother’s cousin. Little is known about the life of the Scottish King & Queen in France, except that they took up residence at Château Gaillard & Philip treated them well. . ◼ Meanwhile, David’s representatives had gained control in Scotland, & David & Joan returned in June 1341, when he took the reins of government into his own hands. David II was taken prisoner at the Battle of Neville’s Cross in County Durham on 17 October 1346, & remained imprisoned in England for eleven years. Although Edward III allowed Joan to visit her husband in the Tower of London a few times, she did not become pregnant. After his release in 1357, she decided to remain in England. Joan was close to her mother, whom she nursed during her last days. . ◼ Joan died in 1362, aged 41, at Hertford Castle, Hertfordshire. She was buried in Christ Church Greyfriars, London, which was heavily bombed in the Blitz.
