An eternity in a glance. This image contains numerous galaxies within Virgo and Coma Berenices. The more notable portion is the stretch of galaxies that looks ljke it is on a chain, known as the Markarian’s chain, although a few galaxies, nominally M84 and M86 are missing. I have elected to frame Makarian’s Chain with M88 and M87, with M88’s spiral structure somewhat visible and M87 being a supergiant elliptical galaxy that is one of the most massive galaxies in our local universe and is located near the center of the Virgo Cluster. Markarian s Chain to #Messier 64 via #NASA #APOD #Astronomy Picture Of the Day. http://buff.ly/2s2djGZ ⠀ ⠀ Top to bottom, this colorful and broad telescopic mosaic links Markarian's Chain of galaxies across the core of the #VirgoCluster to dusty #Spiral #Galaxy Messier 64. Galaxies are scattered through the field of view that spans some 20 full moons across a gorgeous #nightsky. The cosmic frame is also filled with foreground stars from constellations Virgo and the well-groomed #ComaBerenices, and faint, dusty #nebulae drifting above the plane of the #MilkyWay. Look carefully for Markarian's eyes. The famous pair of interacting galaxies is near the top, not far from #M87, the Virgo cluster's giant elliptical galaxy. At the bottom, you can stare down Messier 64, also known as the Black Eye Galaxy. The Virgo Cluster is the closest large galaxy cluster to our own local galaxy group. #VirgoCluster galaxies are about 50 million light-years distant, but #M64 lies a mere 17 million light-years away.

Ontdekking lichtzwakke dwergstelsels in Virgocluster roept vragen op over Lokale Groep

Door zes jaar lang gebruik te maken van de zeer krachtige 340 megapixel Megacam verbonden aan de  Canada France Hawaii Telescope (CFHT) op Hawaï zijn sterrenkundigen van de “Next Generation Virgo Cluster Survey” (NGVS) er in geslaagd om in de bekende Virgocluster vele lichtzwakke sterrenstelsels te ontdekken, dwergstelsels die honderden tot duizenden keer minder massa hebben dan onze eigen Melkweg. Het blijkt dat de Virgocluster, die zo’n vijftig miljoen lichtjaar ver weg ligt, tsjokvol met dit soort kleine stelsels zit, die men ook wel ‘Low Surface Brightness (LSB) Galaxies’ noemt. Aan de hand van de gegevens verzameld met de Megacam van de CFHT konden Jonathan Grossauer en James Taylor (University of Waterloo) vervolgens op de computer simulaties uitvoeren, waaruit men een beeld kon krijgen van de verdeling van donkere materie in de Virgocluster. Tussen de helderheid van de sterrenstelsels en de hoeveelheid donkere materie bleek een goed te volgen relatie te zijn. Probleem is dat die relatie er niet is in onze eigen Lokale Groep, de groep sterrenstelsels waartoe de Melkweg, het Andromedastelsel (M31) en het Driehoekstelsel (M33) behoren. Die groep zou honderden tot wel duizenden dwergstelsels moeten bevatten, maar er zijn er nog geen honderd waargenomen. Sterrenkundigen denken dat donkere materie het ‘skelet’ vormen van de filamenten waarlangs sterrenstelsels zich ontwikkelen, maar op de een of andere manier is dat in de Lokale Groep met de dwergstelsels niet helemaal goed gegaan. The Virgo Cluster

Approximately 50 million light years away, the Virgo Cluster contains over 2,000 galaxies. It is nearest large cluster to earth. 

It contains the elliptical galaxy M87which has an estimated mass of 2.4 trillion suns, making it the largest galaxy in our region of the universe.
