Viritual Grocery Stores

China’s leading food e-commerce site, Yihaodian (which is 51% owned by Walmart), has announced plans to open 1,000 virtual supermarkets across the country.TechInAsia reports that the grocery stores, which will be known as “Unlimited Yihaodian,” will be located in empty city areas.

The 1,200-square-meter spaces merge online and offline shopping, allowing customers to browse items and walk around a store without needing to line up or carry their purchases home.

Customers will need to use their smartphone while standing in the virtual store space to see the products and buy them. Augmented Reality technology will reveal the contents of the supermarket and purchased items will be delivered straight to the customer’s door.
