Favorite "Virtual Band"?
Gorillaz
Alvin and the Chipmunks
The Rainbooms
Josie and the Pussy Cats
The Electric Mayhem
Jabberjaw and the Neptunes
The Hex Girls
Dethklok
Hatsune Miku
The Archies
The Banana Splits
OP how could you forget [leave in tags]
A "virtual band" is a band composed entirely of fictional characters, but still has music credited to them, sometimes even a whole album. The term originates with Gorillaz, but the most commonly cited "original" is Alvin and the Chipmunks
The Front Covers
These are the CDs I bought yesterday with my dad. This post only shows the front covers, I'll post the discs in another post.
I don't usually buy new albums on CD, only older albums. Especially new albums by older bands and/or artists. But that copy of Your Favourite Toy by Foo Fighters caught my eye, so I bought it. It really is a good album, very much reminds me of 2000s Foo Fighters.
Second to last thing, this record shop likes to print out labels with cute and funny comments and stick them to the CD and vinyl covers. Zoom in to read them better.
One more thing, I'm still kicking myself for not looking for any Prodigy albums on CD while I was there. Would've loved to have Jilted Generations and Fat Of The Land in my collection.

GORILLAZ: digital band that broke reality
Gorillaz is a British virtual band that exists as animated characters, not traditional musicians - and that’s exactly what makes them iconic.
Who they are??
Gorillaz was created in 1998 by musician Damon Albarn and artist Jamie Hewlett.
Instead of a real public lineup, the band is represented by animated members:
- 2D — vocals, keyboard
- Murdoc Niccals — bass
- Noodle — guitar
- Russel Hobbs — drums
What makes them unique
Gorillaz are one of the first major “virtual bands.”
They combine:
- alternative rock
- hip-hop
- electronic music
- pop and experimental sounds
All while existing through animation, storytelling, and multimedia.
Key albums
- Gorillaz (2001)
- Demon Days (2005)
- Plastic Beach (2010)
- Humanz (2017)
- The Now Now (2018)
- Cracker Island (2023)
Collaborations
Gorillaz are famous for massive cross-genre collaborations with artists like:
- De La Soul
- Snoop Dogg
- Tame Impala
- Elton John
Each album feels like a global music project rather than a single band.
The concept
The band’s world is also a storyline:
- fictional biographies of members
- chaotic adventures and conflicts
- evolving animated universe
It’s part music project, part art project, part satire.
Why they matter
Gorillaz changed music culture by proving that:
- a band doesn’t need to physically exist
- storytelling can be part of music identity
- genres can blend freely without rules
In short:
Gorillaz are not just a band , they are a digital universe that happens to make music
First single from my album Battle Royale
Wanted to make an indie punk protest song
I'm making some mini Gorillaz album/EP covers! I'm making one every day, Plastic Beach is next ^^
