Never would have I ever thought I would get an actual question since I havent posted in a bazillion years but hooray! Really glad you asked. Generally it depends on the AU. I have many aus of 8-bit and virus 8-bit, but I will only present one for the sake of this not being a 300000000 words fanfiction.

AU - GEMS, VIDEO GAME CHARS

In this AU both virus and regular bit represent the actual video game characters from 8-bit's game. They just happen to posses the same body (aka the irl arcade), however can, at will (mostly for virus), separate from it and create their own bodies. They came to life from dynamikes gem. i really love this au bc it gives 8-bit's minigame backstory a meaning, as he confuses it with real memories. Also he suffered a memory loss at some point. There's more to the game and it also involves virus but this isnt the topic for today. What you do need to know tho is that the videogame 8-bit had was different from the other arcades'. And also that virus and 8-bit can apply video game logic and even digitalize stuff and make their own worlds (mostly virus)!

Onto the actual answer, the gems not only brought them to life (dynamike's gem), but can also make them stronger. Without any gems, both regular 8-bit and Virus are actually theotecially even. In practice (at least in my au) 8-bit doesnt know how to use his abilities properly, which puts him at loss. However if he gets more gems than virus, even if he doesnt get his abilities yet, his power output WILL be stronger and assure him a bigger chance to win. But if virus has more gems than him, well, it's very likely a loss. Also none of them can properly reality warp to a dangerous amount without a necessary amount of gems (most dangerous 20(+) gems) and reality warping is drainful to them. Gems are very rare so dw about virus reality warping

8-Bit and Virus 8-Bit sketches!

Virus is a sort of "being" that lives to infect robots, originating as a hard boss in some arcade games. When taking its own sentience, it seeks empty protoforms of robots in order to manifest in a physical sense.

When infecting other robots, it simply causes errors and glitches, resulting in the dragons pausing in matches. Their system can be taken care of easily with some proper maintenance and some processor clearing!
