Lecture 3 New Perspectives
Here we focused upon the shifts in perspectives in the art and design practice. Focusing upon technological, social, political and cultural changes, this was the birth of the 20th century and the cutting edge imagery of today.
In the 1990′s David Carson created a page layout design for Raygun magazine. Creating abstraction through cutting, pasting and layering creating a new design theme of “Grunge typography”. Changing the face of graphic design” drawing attention to the aesthetic of graphics. This referring to Typography and print and how I desire to expand my developed imagery and type into the print making room. Using letterpress and woodblock print, mono printing and lino.
Expanding my ideas further within Digbeth and the graffiti/street art which is our overall theme of our area. I am going to create some street art influenced designs in typography and illustration based.
This lecture mainly inspires me in typography using various print techniques for mass production of propaganda posters. We looked at the soviet revolution of 1917 and their simple messages created to communicate a message posted all around the buildings in cities, villages and towns. Such posters created by Rodchenko, Books, the original Lilya Brik in 1924 and a poster created in 1920 by Gustav Klutsis for the Soviet Union a proaganda poster using themes of symbolism and metaphors to communicate a message to brainwash society into thinking in a certain way with the use of print, typography and colour.
I am going to go down to the print room tomorrow to ask for a tutorial and to experiment in typography print making in letter press and woodblock printing. These lectures have influenced my creativity and inspiration towards my work within the project and inspired my passion towards the design process and within the industry.
The lecture overall has signified the overall power of typography colour and layout and composition. How graphic design links in with print making and illustration even the power of photography. Looking at the screen print of “Che Guervara” an image which has now come to represent freedom and political struggles worldwide ever since. This is a very recognisable print of a poster which is still used today in graffiti, street art and even used with sticker bombs in areas of derelict. Another pop art themed poster created of Obama for his political campaign was produced in 2008 by shepard Fairey for change and progress. Using the hues of blue white and red the colours of the american flag.
Another development began in the 70′s a movement called the “Punk Movement” this was about challenging culture, music and fashion a rebellion almost. A example of this work can be showed by Jamie Reia’s album design for the Sex Pistols music called “God save the Queen”. Using photomontage as an aesthetic to create a sense of rebellion against the monarchy using the Brittish, St Georges flag. Influence from Andy Warhol is recognised for screen printing and the pop art hues and the use of photo montage. Using type to influence the movement aesthetically. I am going to create stencils for my imagery to paint over onto our installation/sculpture building, referring back to pop art andy warhol and also Jim Fitzpatrick with his poster of “Che Guevara”.
