So, discussing with @nocturnalgremlingiant and @qhostpi22 about nightbrother naming patterns (Second time with ghost already) and wanted to explain my own headcanons and how they work with the two new nightbrother we have:
I personally believe that the adjectives/actions names (Savage, Feral, Scorn, etc) are given by nightbrothers, and that the other one (Asaji, Talzin, Merrin) are given by the nightsisters. Notice that I didn't mention Maul, that's for reasons all explain later in the post.
But if you think you can already see some plot holes in this idea, because we have characters like Icarus and Viscus, which are nightbrothers with more normal names, here's my explanation to that: The way nightbrothers name new brothers vary depending on the village/clan.
When we see the village that Savage and Feral comes from, we meet Viscus too. Hes one of the oldest nightbrothers we see on screen, and is the leader who answer directly to the nightsisters. We learn that that clan has the best nightbrothers there is, and that makes sense when you think that it's not only the village that Talzin sent Asaji to get a nightbrother to fight Dooku, but supposedly, there is 2 of Talzin sons there, and would have had a third in case Maul lived there. They are the first choice for nightsisters and I don't think it's only about obedience and strength.
Viscus is a latin name, referring to a small organ. Organs are vital parts of the body even the small ones, and in a chain of command, it would be like an analogy to refer to a nightbrother in a position of command as one minor organ.
Icarus comes from a Greek mith. - What that means for the future of this character is another topic - And due to his connection to Maul and the abilities he displayed in the trailers, it's very likely he comes from the same village, being one of the few survivors of the massacre in Dathomir.
If we believe that latin and greek exist in the star wars universe, I would imagine them as still being a mythology and old language, being seen as art and cultural appreciation, how it is today in our world. So having certain nightbrothers named by this language could show how this village is considered better then the others because the nightbrothers that come from there are taught in more than just fighting and learn about arts, culture and history. Probably to be more attractive, interesting and entertaining to nightsisters. (This also implies very uncomfortable notions but this is for another post)
But then how about the others? Savage and Feral, and Scorn too, since him and Icarus are brothers? The point would be, Force-sensitivity.
Nightbrothers that are Force-sensitive would be seen as even better options due to how the nightsister magick is also based on the Force, so if a young brother displayed signs and were tested to be Force-sensitive as a baby, he would be given a more cultural name so to mark him as an option.
Viscua advanced age, the responsibility the nightsisters put in him, how he interacts with Asaji and sees the nightsister magick would be explained if he was a Force-sensitive nightbrother who received his name due to said sensitivity as a baby.
And in the new trailer we see Icarus fighting with Maul saberstaff, which could be a nod to his Force-sensitivity. And how Maul notices it and decides to help him to learn to use the Force. But Scorn wouldn't be one, and thats why his name is an adjective.
But then how about Savage and Feral? Why would their names be adjectives then? That's the thing, I don't think Savage and Feral were Force-sensitive, at least not always.
Feral doesn't shows any sings of this sensitivity when we see him and is mostly saved by Savage. And Savage, despite being more skilled than Feral, does not show any signs of being Force-sensitive besides being a bit more strong and you could say that was just because he was older and smarter, so he would have trained more than Feral already.
I think he became a Force-sensitive after the nightsisters ritual, that he had a bit more than others but not enough to manifest itself before and thats why they were able to hone in he force in him during the ritual.
If you look at him using the Force it's a bit harder for him and doesn't come as easily to other users, that's cause he never had it before and is a literal baby learning now.
And then we have Maul. Maul who is force-user but also a nightbrother from the village, it doesn't make sense! But that's when you remember, there is no confirmation Maul is his actual name, or at least not the name it was intended for him to have.
Sidious wouldn't care to learn what's the naming pattern in nightbrother culture, and if he took Maul young enough he could very easily change his name to a more sith sounding one. Since he always meant to manipulate Maul into being just his apprentice.
Maul himself says in book and others that he is not aware if Maul was always his name. The nightbrothers or Talzin herself might have planned to name him something else but didn't have the time or he simply doesn't remember the name anymore. (I personally believed it would have been Syshipus)
So this is it! These are my headcanons on how Dathomir naming culture works!
Because @katassapphire asked ... Talzin for the shibari posting. Well, and Viscus.
