大崎八幡宮 (Osaki Hachimangu) is one of those places you discover in the middle of the city and wonder how is it possible that they are so quiet and peaceful😉 1️⃣The shrine was first founded in 801 in Iwate prefecture by the shogun Sakanoue no Tamuramaro while subduing the tribes in the north-east Japan. 2️⃣Next, during the Muromachi period (1336-1573) the Osaki family, rulers of the northern Miyagi prefecture, moved the shrine to its current location in Osaki city. 3️⃣When in the Edo period (1603-1867) Data Masamune founded Sendai he decided to design this area as a sacred one. The Osaki Hachimangu Shrine as we know it today was finally built in 1607, serving as the guardian of the Sendai City and for the divine protection of the ruling Date family. March 11, 2019, marks the 8th anniversary of the Great East Japan Earthquake/3.11 disaster. Kesennuma ... was one of the towns that was badly hit by the tsunami. Today I wanted to share with you all my top 10 favorite pictures of Kesennuma as it continues to recover.

Inspired by @chouhatsumimi's post, my 10 favorite photos from my four years living in Kesennuma.

We found this 祠 (hokora) within the precincts of the 曲木神社 (Magaki Shrine). I have always been fascinated by those small shrines located either somewhere close to the big shrine or just on the empty road or between buildings🧐 The name used for them actually means "small shrine" - would you guess?😉 Such shrines were dedicated in the past to a kami that did not warrant a construction of a full-fledged 神社 (jinja) and now to a local folk-religious cults or a kami not under the jurisdiction of any specific shrine. Have you ever heard the story of Daruma? I am sure that you've seen this character many times, but how much do you know about it? It is said that Daruma dolls are modeled on the monk called Bodhidharma, the founder of Zen Buddhism, a sect stressing importance of meditation on your way to enlightenment. He decided to meditate in a cave and he did it for 9 years! But during the 7th year of his meditation he fell asleep and was so angry for loosing his focus, that he grabbed a knife and cut his eyelids off. This way he would never fall asleep again😨 BUT once his eyelids touched the ground, they made first green tea sprouts🍵 (and that is why green tea helps you stay awake, not because of all the caffeine🧐) Stay with me, it gets darker here 😉 the dolls don't have arms and legs because after 9 years of meditation, Bodhidharma's limbs started to atrophy and eventually fall off😱 But there is a bright side to that horror story! The original Daruma dolls never fall down, you can knock them down as much as you want, but they will always get back up! And that is why they are also a symbol of resilience and perserverence💪 Also, when you first buy the Daruma doll, it does not have its eyes drawn. That is because you kind of want to blackmail the deity to grant you your wish. Shimenawa ropes are used for ritual purification but also to indicate a pure or sacred place - in this case a very old tree, believed to be over 3000 years old😱 Such tree with a shimenawa rope is also called 依り代 (yorishiro) - an object that is believed to be capable of attracting spirits, gods, called kami. It is a place that can be physically occupied by them during many religious ceremonies. 磊々峡 ー Rairaikyo Gorge is located in 秋保町 (Akiu town), known as a hot spring resort, just a 30-minute drive from downtown Sendai ♨️ It's a 1-kilometer long hiking trail, hugging the cliff 20 meters above the river🏞 It's also alway open, so you can visit it anytime. The gorge is known from its weird, yet beautiful rock formations, created probably by the river changing its course slightly due to snowmelt in the rivers, or even a small earthquake. All large or special rocks have their names, same with multiple waterfalls you can find there. Definitely a place for any nature lovers out there! 塩釜神社 (Shiogama Shrine) in Shiogama City is a large Shinto shrine complex located in the center of the city. The complex is believed to be 1200 years old and is the protector of fishermen 🎣 and safe childbirth👶🤰 Fifteen buildings of the shrine have been built in the Edo period and have been declared important cultural treasures. The main entrance to the shrine is via 202 stairs but you can also reach it through other different routes.
