Hi All, Leona here and welcome to my first blog!
I have created a blog for college with four other students and we have decided to talk about, promote, and shine a light on our local town that we have grown up in. So yes, that means I am going to dedicate each post to the majestic land of rissoles and Lee Chin. If you’re here to learn about all that Wexford has to offer or if you’re just here to support a friend (thank you), I hope you enjoy.
Disclaimer: We decided as a group to make this a blog as funny as possible (serious regrets) so I will try my best to insert ‘funny Wexford things’ where I can, but if you’re not satisfied with my level of comedic contribution to the Sunny South East, I suggest that you follow Wexford Corporation. Guaranteed a good giggle.
But if you want to know what you must do before leaving Wexford, then look no further.
Voted number 1 in Ireland’s top 10 beaches for 2019, Curracloe has owned its place as being the first recommendation on my list. Whether you want to walk along the beach, or trek through the forest, this is a great way to relax and forget that Wexford hasn’t won an All-Ireland Senior Hurling Final since ‘96.
2. Visit Hook Head and Loftus Hall
Hook Head is a famous lighthouse in Wexford that provides a good opportunity for a cute insta. Girlos, the winds are real by the lighthouse so I suggest to tie your hair up and bring a coat.
While you’re down that neck of the woods, you may as well take a tour of Wexford’s most haunted house, Loftus Hall. Not normally my cup of tea but went on the tour and it was quare (translation for our non-locals: extremely/very) good.
3. Visit Johnstown Castle
Another walking activity. Has a nice little café and the occasional temperamental peacock.
4. Explore the Irish National Heritage Park
So, the Heritage Park is an outdoor museum that takes you through Ireland’s history. You can go on a guided tour around the park, or just stroll around yourself if you want. But realistically, if you didn’t go here with your primary school, are you even from Wexford?
So, although there’s no shopping centre in Wexford, the main street in Wexford has haaaaapes (translation for our non-locals: an abundance) of shops to browse in. TK Max, Pennies, Top Shop, New Look, Industry etc. May not give Grafton street a run for its money, but it does the job.
So, after all that sightseeing, you’re going to be starrrrvin, so a chipper will be in order. Mangan’s, Premier or Caffola. Job. And while you’re at it, why not try the famous Wexford rissole (For our non-locals, a rissole is a combination of chips, herbs, spices, breadcrums, salt and vinegar and can come battered or breaded).
So lumping 7/8/9 together because realistically, drinking is drinking. But I believe they should each get their own number on my list because I want the non-locals to know that nobody in Wexford judges you on the time you start drinking at. If you want Jager at 1:00 in the day, you go for it. Tequila at 4:00? You do you. ‘In da horrors’ (translation for non-locals: VERY drunk) by 10:00? Same. Anyways, here’s a small list of some bars in Wexford that might tickle your fancy;
Mooney’s – Thirsty Thursdays must
Crown – Good live music but don’t appear to wash their carpets
T-Morris – Smoking area is lit
Macken’s – People watching pub
Simons – Yellow belly beer and good sambos during the day
Sky in the Ground – ideal for a few quiet ones
So, if you’re buzzing to get to a dancefloor after your Jager and tequila shots, straight to the Centenary Stores you should go! Is it as grim on the inside as it is on the outside? Yes. Is it necessary to go at the end of the night? Yes. Should you barter with the ticket man to get in for free? Yes. With three floors, questionable toilets and high prices, I’d go as far to say that it is the Coppers of the South East.
So that’s it! Want to keep it short and sweet. Locals, if I have missed any gems of Wexford, do let me know. Non-locals, if I haven’t convinced you to visit Wexford, I don’t know what will! But anyways, hope you enjoyed. Until next time.
