Math/Art Visual Patterns
Did an online math circle, Math Maker Neighborhood, with Ukraine!, this morning with @goldenboyreturns. Here are our slides; above some of the patterns we made for it. 4th pattern is from @hereoncloudnine.

Visual Pattern
A mathcomic for Sophia Wood’s #mathober theme “growth”.  Sophia Wood’s inktober like challenge - see all the themes and her sketches here. One of my favoritest things is Fawn Nguyen’s Visual Patterns site.

I'm going to do some near array number talks with 3rd graders, so got it in my head to make this GeoGebra. You can set the total functions and a width function.
So what are the functions for the top pattern and the one below?
See visualpatterns.org for Fawn Nguyen's motherlode.
This is probably the one I'll do with the 3rd graders.
Flat of Apples
Something about this image from Howie Hua
made me think about one of my favorite visual patterns as a family of visual patterns. So, off to GeoGebra. I guess to be this and the stars on the US flag...
Ilonka Squares
Saw this painting by ilonka and was fascinated by its irregularity. So off to GeoGebra...

Discovering “New” Methods Through Visual Patterns
I had a go at creating a “Visual Pattern” after having so much fun attempting Simon Gregg’s pattern from Fawn Nguyen’s website.
It looked like this:
Can you see how it grows? Is there a rule to how it is growing or is it random?
Stage 4, 5 and 6 might make it easier, but no guarantees:
If you want to figure it out for yourself, don’t scroll past this point.

Growing Squares
I needed to make an animation of Kate Nowak's visual pattern (#106Â at Fawn Nguyen's site), and thought I would make it so you could generalize and see a few other patterns. Â
The original pattern is 2, 7, 14, ... squares covered. The second row has 17, 27, 39... and 26, 38, 52... squares covered.
