This is some stuff from my presentation. Before I began to sketch the storyboard, I wrote a storyline which was essential to follow and took Justin’s advice to create an animatic. Below are some of the things I planned to write.
Introduction
For over centuries, there’s an expectation for humans to form relationships. From the media we consume to our daily lives, we are taught to not be alone. And man can’t be an island. That’s what got me thinking. Why do humans need companionship?
In 2019, Jordan Peterson theorised it’s a consequence of children being dependent on guardians. Intelligence takes time to develop and we need guidance in our early life stages. In addition, the attachment theory by Bowlby in 1958 declares infants need to form a close emotional bond with a caregiver.
Another reason is humans are a social species. According to Cozolino in 2006, our social brains functions in attachment, predicting and communication. It’s our primary instinct of survival that we rely on others in times of danger, anxiety, illness. That’s why it’s best to watch a horror movie with someone else.
Thirdly, it reduces loneliness and it’s effects. This includes a 29% chance of heart problems, 32% of strokes and doubles likely hood of dementia. Aside from physical health, it leads to poor grades and suicidal thoughts. Single women are 4x likely to be lonely. Meanwhile Single men are 10x likely to be lonely. And even with the help of social media, communication levels are still low.
Sadly, relationships do not solve the problem. From fairytales, love is the ultimate cure to all problems. This leads to us seeing it as a form of escapism. To avoid thinking about your past or the present. In the end, self development is necessary. That’s why most teens are unsure of their identities as they are a reflection of their counterparts. They want to fit in and people please. It’s honestly sad. Some may feel better even being alone. That is why good emotional connections are the key, not just any relationship to fill a void.
