“Do you think we could’ve been friends, too?” 100% Like, the whole Blue Spirit episode is incredible and is the first time we get to see Zuko as a little sexier than we expected. But it’s that last moment: the regret and the potential and the longing, and then right after we get the devastation and the confusion. This is peak television.
Yesssssssssssss. That bit got me hook. line. sinker. So much expansive potential hinted at by that tiny phrase and then it all evaporates like an intangible dream, running from the heat of Zuko’s flames and pain.
“the first time we get to see Zuko as a little sexier than we expected” You know, I didn’t really realize it, but yeah! The blue spirit is so cool and silent and quick thinking, he seems to be uniquely trained for exactly that type of mission, and when the mask came off, I wasn’t surprised that it was Zuko so much as I was surprised that it wasn’t a level-headed 40 year old! I think that element of unexpected and welcome maturity definitely adds to the culmination towards that quiet moment in the woods.
Also, they worked so well together while escaping. It’s always sexy watching two badass humans work together and do it well. Especially adapting to each other’s strategies on the fly, with limited knowledge of each other’s abilities. Especially considering Zuko wasn’t saying a single damn thing to conceal his identity, and the two of them still successfully coordinated their actions, coming up with pretty creative solutions. So seeing all that and then finding out it’s fucking Zuko the whole time?? That’s too much. I’m unprepared to defend my feelings against such assault.
