Any crunchy thoughts on Kallias Viviane?
(it is genuinely comical the way i read this, went kallias and viviane? i don't know that i've ever really thought about them. except for— and then out loud said, "oh no.")
so! obviously canonically it is harder for fae to conceive than humans. but i definitely think there's variability to that. because i just love the idea of the magic of each court impacting its people deeply and in disparate ways. so i think courts that are related to fertility in some way — namely spring and autumn — have a much easier time getting pregnant. (look at the vanserras with seven sons; look at tamlin having two brothers.) but a court associated with barrenness and inhospitability like winter — i think fae from that court have a much harder time conceiving and carrying to term than any other. this makes what amarantha did by way of punishing winter for its role in the rebellion against her so much worse. not only killing younglings, not only killing younglings who are difficult to bring into the world, but killing younglings of the court that struggles the most of any to do so. it also gives an even deeper fury to kallias' resentment of rhysand.
by acosf, we find out that viviane is pregnant. i think that was a very, very arduous journey. i think viviane probably miscarried more than once. i think she knew that would be the case — enough of her family and her friends and her people have suffered the same — but that did not make it any easier on her or kallias.
if you want to get reallllly crunchy and play around with canon a bit, i know viviane didn't realize she loved kallias back until a few years of separation, but i could easily see them having a sexual relationship that predates utm. (viviane in denial of her feelings for the heir but okay with accepting her attraction to him; kallias desperate for anything she will give him, even if he has to go without the full extent of her love.) i could also see viviane, panicked, realizing she is pregnant, not sure if she wants to be the mother of a potential heir, not sure if she wants to be tied to the future high lord, giving birth and sending their baby away to a trusted relative. she returns to court after her absence. utm occurs very shortly after this. because they were outside of the city viviane was protecting, one of the younglings that amarantha killed was her and kallias'. viviane was going to tell kallias, she really was — but he was so happy to be returned to her, and then they found out they were mates, and then the war was happening, and she knew that if he found this out, he would never help the night court fight against hybern. so kallias has no idea.
