【THE STAR MAGAZINE 2014 NOVEMBER ISSUE 】VIXX’S INTERVIEW TRANS.
Q: A while ago, you guys had a debut showcase in Japan. The tickets were all sold out and the fans requested for an encore, right? Are there any differences between the Japanese and the Korean fans?
Leo: The Japanese fans tend to focus on our performance throughout the whole show. So when you ask them “how was the performance” they would leave us with a lot of comments. On the other hand, the Korean fans are enthusiastic; they shout a lot and jumps along with us (creating a fun atmosphere.)
Q: This album’s concept is pretty special. What’s the meaning behind the title song “Error”?
N: The song is about the scars left from a relationship and the pain of being heartbroken. The cyborg can’t feel the emotions of love ends up having an error (mistake, malfunction).
Q: It’s a weird but somehow it seems cool at the same time. What’s the content of the song?
N: It’s a sad love story, although the guy turns into a cyborg, he could still feel the emotions of love. We have put a lot of effort in to maximize the contents and feelings as if it was a film.
Q: Lyricist Kim Im-na, Kim Ji-hyang, Albertsson, composer melodesign, including Ravi has participated in this album. The lineup is amazing. Which musician did you guys enjoy (the most) working with?
N: Ravi who was in charge of producing had a really hard time. We could see there was a more serious side of him which was unusual. It felt like he knew all members’ individuality/ speciality and trying to bring 100% out of us.
Ravi: This album was very tiring. I only remember the parts when I was working with our CEO Hwang Se-Jun, producing team and Melody Design. Our CEO is very subtle and sensitive when comes to producing songs. He will be making a song and then have 10 titles for it. Originally we were going to use the 9th song on the album as the title song but he changed his mind to his most favorite song on the day before the MV shooting day. It was totally a mental breakdown. It seems that we were keen, while having the distress of producing.
Q: We heard that VIXX will have a comeback with a VIXX trademark style. What does each of you think the VIXX style is?
Leo: VIXX is a big group with joy. This time, we want to satisfy/ achieve a visual and auditory pleasing style on the stage.
Hyuk: VIXX style is performances that only VIXX can do, that only we can pull off on the stage with the fantasy concept.
Ken: I think it’s like a musical. In other words there is development (there’s a story to it.) We will be going on the stage not only with the thought of simply singing for 4 minutes but we also need to act.
Hongbin: I think it is drawing empathy with the audience through our expressions.
Ravi: It is obviously fantasy. We could have concepts like vampires from novel and films but for VIXX, it is important that we can become someone else’s fantasy. I think VIXX style is someone else’s wannabe, and someone else’s imagination that has became a reality.
Q: Through this album, it feels like you guys have turned into men. Is there a sexy point that can show your masculinity?
Hyuk: In recent years, I have lost my baby fat and people say that my jaw line looks manly.
Ken: My palm, it’s smooth.
Hongbin: My soothing voice.
Ravi: This time I had an extreme hair makeover. Anyways, doesn’t it seem like I’m getting a step closer to being sexy? I think my bass voice and the tone is very masculine.
N: My expression when I’m on the stage.
Leo: Me too. I think VIXX is sexy when we’re on the stage.
Q: You all had tattoos for today’s photo shoot. What kind of meanings does it have?
Leo: ‘Music In My World’, because I love music a lot.
Hyuk: ‘It’s Me. Cyborg’ it’s the first time that I want to try to have a tattoo. It was decided in a short period of time and it’s our album’s concept.
Ken: ‘Sexy I Know It’ It has a meaning of expressing the sexiness inside of me.
N: ‘Sin Prisa Pero Sin Pausa’. It’s in Spanish, it means “you can go slowly but don’t stop”. I want to say that to myself right now.
Hongbin: ‘Be Yourself”. It means to be yourself.
Ravi: ‘Just Feel My Vibe’. It means to feel my vibe.
Q: VIXX’s “VIXX TV” is a great entertaining show, we’re curios of the behind cuts that wasn’t aired.
Ravi: All the parts that didn’t get to be broadcasted have its reasons. It might be because of the inappropriate words but it’s not only swearing words. Sometimes there were words that drop the level of the show. But almost everything has been aired. There isn’t a big behind story.
Ken: I made the most tongue slips. For example: I say bag, 가방 (ka-bang) as 가반 (ka-ban). And it was edited out when my stomach was growling.
Hyuk: There were some situations. There was a time when we were in the middle of filming and a plane went past (which was really noisy) so it was edited out.
Leo: I usually pay attention to our member’s actions and it’s funny when they’re not ready/ in order. Ravi was being interviewed about music, and then Hongbin made an irrelevant remark: “it’s such a good day, it’s so fun.”
Hyuk: “VIXX TV” is all about VIXX’s daily life. It shows how these 6 young men play jokes on each other.
Q: Do you have a memorable scene?
N: My favorite is VIXX TV’s first episode. It was aired without many editing. It showed our fresh charm as it is. It’s embarrassing but as I watch it over again and again, it has its own attractions.
Ravi: We started filming two weeks after our debut. We were only doing it for fun but then it became so big and now it became a way to communicate with our fans.
Q: You guys seem to have a close relationship with each other.
Ravi: We are just like brothers. But that doesn’t mean we always get on well with each other, we do argue but we would make up straight away. But we have never fought. Hahaha, this kind of team will last long.
Q: Ravi produced VIXX TV’s logo song and it showed a warm, attentive side of him. It seems like it was for the broadcast, is he like that in real life?
Hyuk: Ravi hyung has just become a producer, so he still lacks in a many areas, right? But Ravi hyung always says that he’s thankful (to the company) that his song can be released and also thankful to the members for singing his song.
Ken: I’m curious of how it will turn out if Ravi’s other songs were given to other companies. It could be even better.
Q: There seems to be many figures inside Ravi’s recording studio, do you like animation?
Ravi: I wasn’t interested in them (in the past). I was thinking of decorating the studio and then made up my mind. I gathered all the figures that were given by the fans and Ken hyung, there was an enormous amount of figures. As I allocate them, it filled up the whole studio.
Q: Recently, N successfully became a MC on “Dream Concert”.
N: When I was little, all family members gathers together and we read books. It was only for an hour but it seems to have a great effect. “VIXX TV” also helped a lot. In addition, when we were promoting our second single album, I was a fixed guest on 5 radio shows. Then, I got comfortable with speaking in public. Of course, working with a great partner has also helped.
Q: Ken has started to act in a sitcom called “Boarding house no. 24”.
Ken: I was confident when I started it, but it is harder than I thought. Since the PD and senior actors are looking after me, I’m learning a lot. I’m playing a character that has no dating experience (lit.: motae solo man), but in reality I’m not so it’s difficult for me to immerse myself into the character. Hahaha
Ravi: The first episode was so-so, but it’s gradually getting better. He (Ken) explained that the reason was because he failed to adapt the character, but there’s no way to verify if it’s the truth.
Q: The scene where Kim Sa Eun was biting Ken was memorable. Did it really hurt?
Ken: Actually, she bit a lot harder. To be honest I was too nervous to feel the pain. I was embarrassed because Sa Eun noona keeps apologizing. The filming atmosphere was very nice and everyone is an idol except for Kwang Gyu hyung. Our age is similar, so we talk about music and acting. It’s a like a study group/ club.
Q: Leo was a representative football player back in the days. Recently, there are many idols that are good at football; is there anyone that you think are particular good?
Leo: I was a national representative for the teen’s football team. I was famous for being good at football since elementary school. BEAST’s Yoon Doojoon, Lee Kikwang, Yang Yoseob seniors are very good too. EXO’s Luhan’s skill is not the average level.
N: We played football together, our levels are different. He’s good to the point that it’s like he jumps out at me in a spacious ground.
Hyuk: I think he’s the best player among the idols.
Q: You were in the musical “Full House” with Jung Eunji. Are there any episodes/ little stories during the performance?
Leo: When it was our first performance. I thought the scene was over but it wasn’t and I went down to change my clothes. It was chaos on the stage, they kept looking for me. The other actors that haven’t appeared on the stage yet, went up and improvised on the spot. And I realized it about 5 minutes later. In the end, the director went up the stage and apologized to the audiences. It still makes me giddy when I think about it.
Q: Talking about giddy experiences, we can’t forget maknae Hyuk’s speciality in the laws of jungle. What do the hyungs think about it?
Ravi: Ah, it was so bad.
Ken: He tried his best so I will give him 20 out of 100. Because he’s our maknae so it was cute.
Hyuk: I just said that I had a speciality; I didn’t say it was good. I did my best so I don’t regret it.
Q: So, as VIXX’s maknae, how many points would you give Hyuk?
Ravi: 0 point for aegyo, 95 points for manners and overall 90 points. We don’t order him to do anything. Whether it’s making dinner or takes off wrap, it’s a nice to see him to clean up. (lit.: take the initiative and set an example).
Q: It’s the end of the interview. We will soon be able to see VIXX on the stage. What do you guys wants to achieve through the promotion, and what are you goals?
N: VIXX to become this period’s icon. It is our goal for this year. Last year, getting no.1 was our goal. And now, we hope that the clothes that VIXX is wearing, the contact lenses, and VIXX’s songs to become a trend.
Q: What is VIXX’s ultimate goal?
N: To make a stage together. Like Ravi and Leo writing and producing songs, when we hold our concert, we want to participate in deciding the concert concept and settings. We want to communicate with the fans, and we hope that the fans will enjoy it. We will continue to improve and show a better side of us in the future.
