By describing Catherine/Giovanni Vizzani as both “unnatural” and having a “masculine Spirit,” suggests to the reader that people, after discovering her sexual activities with women while disguised as man when she died, viewed her activities as inappropriate due to her lustful nature and unusual in accordance to her peculiar taste for women. However, she is also described as “reserved and shy towards young Men,” which contradicts this notion. This evidence implies that while she may had taken a better liking towards women, she may had liked also men as any woman would but was uncomfortable on how to act around them for she may have felt she was too “masculine” for their taste. This means this that she may had been worried about how other people would view her in terms of her sexual activities and lustful nature; but, was determined to fulfill her “passions” by disguising herself as a man and satisfying her needs whereas others would have restrained themselves in her situation and encourages readers to consider that by demonstrating there is no differences between man and woman when it comes to pursuing their passions, society’s expectations placed on women differ than those of men and have greater restrictions placed on them of which Vizzani oversteps them all.
