it’s an active community, a movement

The Vlogbrothers channel was the first ever YouTube channel I subscribed to.

I remember I started watching the videos after I finally decided to give TFiOS a chance.

I read it, I loved it, and I wanted to know more.

I never thought one community based around one YouTube channel could change my life so much.

But, to be honest, I am so grateful to John and Hank and everyone in Nerdfighteria.

First of all, I’d like to acknowledge how awesome and truly incredible it is that this community, that John and Hank started, has grown to such lengths and been around as long as it has. This is an achievement in itself.

But what really stands out to me is just how kind, inspiring and overall good this community is. John and Hank have made me laugh, they’ve reduced me to tears. I’ve been shocked and inspired by everything their videos have encompassed.

Whether it’s Hank’s classic “Jokes in 4 Minutes” videos which always brighten my mood when I’m having a bad day, or it’s the Thoughts From Places videos that have made me a more humble person in the eyes of the broader world.

The Nerdfighter community has changed me as a person. Because of John and Hank, I am proud of my nerdiness and I embrace it. Nerdfighteria, to me, is not just a ‘fandom’ it’s an active community, (I mean, Crash Course made learning FUN. How amazing is that?) a movement, a group of people who agree that the world sucks but we can all do our little part to change that. Nerdfighteria encourages an attitude as well. A new perspective. John and Hank encourage the appreciation of the little things in life that I would have taken for granted before; that we should be accepting of people for who they are and appreciate things people often take for granted; literature, science, the random and crazy habits of society. I’m so much more aware of the world and of myself now that I am a Nerdfighter.

At the same time, Nerdfighteria makes me feel humble.

This community is beyond anything I ever knew I could be a part of.

I am proud to be a Nerdfighter.

I aspire to be like them

The Vlogbrothers have done so many amazing things. I can’t say how they affected me, except that they are very entertaining. They have, however affected so many other people. I can’t know how many people they have helped, encouraged or just made laugh. They are so amazing, I aspire to be like them. As a writer and as a person.

Hank and John Green are so inspiring and uplifting, I don’t see how anyone could NOT have a positive impact from them.

proud to be a nerd

When I found Nerdfighteria about a year and a half ago, I has so happy to find a group of people that cared about many of the things that I cared about and made me proud to be a nerd. The Vlogbrothers make me laugh, but at the same time think deeply about different things and I don’t know what my life would be like without them.

Hey Alan, just read your post announcing you're selling your stake in DFTBA records. Wow! Big step. When I read "November 2008" at the top there it reminded me how long I've been in this community... I remember you guys announcing DFTBA records! It's been a long time. I've purchased a fair amount of merch and music over the past few years. I've always had a good experience. Congratulations on a job well done! This must be a strange but exciting time for you. I wish you good luck in the future :)

I’ve known Hank since the summer of 2007 when we collab’ed on a video. I emailed him after “Accio Deathly Hallows” was featured on the front page to see if he’d be in one of my videos (I was the king of collabs back in those days). He was a little hesitant but told me to send over the script for him to look at. He wrote me back the next day and was like “this totally sounds like something I’d say, I’ll do it!” It’s weird to think about that, that was seven years ago! The vlogbrothers have viewers younger than that now!

Anyway, yeah, “strange but exciting” describes it perfectly. It was a little odd waking up this morning and not immediately checking overnight sales and two different work inboxes. No meetings or new product launches or anything like that. It was a different experience after doing this seven days a week, every week, for so long.

But I’m also excited to work on graphic projects for fun again, not for a client or creator. And to work on my own music, which has sat on the back burner for the last few years while I helped others release theirs. I was also really happy when Hank invited me to keep my merch on DFTBA and when he welcomed new designs from me at any time in the future. (Now that I don’t have a monthly paycheck anymore I really should get to work on some new merch!!)

Thanks for the luck, I’ll take it! But hopefully I won’t need it, as I’m still surrounded by so many great and supportive people.
