So I think I was connected to the frustrated Cass fans, and I honestly don’t remember why we were so vexed. I think it was simply that after the ableism of OYL, then the erasing of Nu52, and finally the choices made by dc when Cass was finally brought back, that a lot of the patience and goodwill we had was used up. That said, I can only speak for myself, and I barely remember back then, (my memory isn’t great these days, which is mildly concerning) and I got into comics later in life than the rest of my friends. (Like 2010 or 2011. Miles Morales’ first comic was one of my first series, and Avengers Academy was my first 616 one)
I do know nowadays I kind of am done with the bat side of dc entirely, though I think the breaking point for that was when more than half of dc’s books were bat related. Well, that plus how dc tends to make Bruce “canonically does not pay his taxes” Wayne the bestest ever who can beat anyone no matter how badly written it is. But I’m not usually angry at this point, more rolling my eyes.
That said, currently the only dc book I actively follow is Absolute Flash. Wally can be very relatable, and sometimes that art is just beautiful. The rectangle effect is inspired. Love the way Wally’s possible neurodivergence seems to be overlapping with being a bit unstuck in time. Though I do not know much of typical Flash lore, so the changes in this elseworld don’t upset me the way they might vex a proper Flash fan.
Also I still want to finish silver age Doom Patrol but executive dysfunction is killing my butt. The complete collection is a brick. I only am like up to the issue where Rita might marry that asshole Mento.
But regarding other (mostly) unpowered superheroes, I am thinking of hunting down a copy of Sandman Mystery Theatre. I liked Dodds in his recent mini series; I have been enjoying rewatching the Green Hornet serial (similar gadgets and costumes) and I am excited for Spider-Noir, so it’s tempting to try out that DC classic.
Sorry, I’ve been chattering away. Point is, that’s my current (poor) recollection of my frustration at the time. Apologies for having so few answers. I don’t think I personally was calling for him to be fired, but by then I think by then I was mostly just done with dc, and was trying not to waste energy thinking about it. At least, that’s what I recall of it. My memories might be incorrect.
that's a lot of text, but I'm hearing what you're saying. Again, I'm a good deal behind but am still very much enjoying the Bat-books, while also understanding why DC fans might feel a bit 'over' Batman.
Sandman Mystery Theater is masterful and I highly recommend it. It's more in-line with Agatha Christie than The Green Hornet, but terrific fun. I think Guy Davis does a lot of the art, which meets the tenor of the plot just perfectly.
Alas Rita does marry Mento... but it's still further reading.
Looking forward to checking out Absolute Flash. The first few issues of Absolute Batman and Absolute Martian Manhunter and they're terrific.
