Symbolism of Static and foreshadowing
Let's start with Miku's design! It's a bright outfit made to evoke a character from a kid's show. But the colors and pattern also looks like the SMPTE color bars as you can see here:
It's also very in your face with the album cover, and once you notice it you can see it throughout the whole music video as it serves as the primary color pallet for the video save for a few exceptions (orange in the second image, miku's skin tone, etc)
If you're a long time vocaloid fan as well you'll notice that these colors also match up with other vocaloid characters.
Yellow - Kagamine Twins (We're gonna count them as one in this case, it would also fit for the twins to be treated as mostly the same in an old timey cartoon setting. It's also possible it's just one of the two who is around in this world)
Cyan - Miku, I know red is used a lot for her in this video but I think part of it is for contrast and also her hair is pretty much the exact same shade of cyan we see used in the entire video
Green - Gumi
Pink - Luka
Red - Meiko
Blue - Kaito
Six slots total! My assumption is that Miku is part of a cast, but she is the only one left now for whatever reason. My first piece of evidence, the empty chairs in the studio:
Six empty seats with spotlights on them. The number six is used a lot throughout the video visually and even with parts of the lyrics.
This little 'dance' Miku does as well, it's actually spelling out "DONT GO" in maritime flag signals! Which is also six letters total, shout out to this youtube comment on the video
My theory is: Miku is 'filling in' for the others since she's by herself now to make the show less 'empty'. And now with all this in mind, let's look at some of those 'secret' images in the video. Shout out to @star-rot for grabbing the images. I'll link the post here.
There is a story here. I think it's too soon to claim these images are explaining specific scenarios, I do think it's showing Miku trying to fill in the gaps in her life the others left behind. Again, I don't think Miku is supposed to be 'red' in this cast. But it is being used to convey to us that something is wrong. There are things missing and Miku is scared, she doesn't want to be alone. All she has left is us, the audience. Red no longer just represents one of her cast mates, it also represents her feelings. I also feel like she was likely the 'leader' or 'main character' in this cast so she feels their absence must more strongly. Her outfit having everyone's colors is a way to make her stand out from them but also be the thing that unites them together. After all, we need supporting casts for a reason.
I don't think this will be the last we see of this Miku or her story. If you go on the flavor foley website...
1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6
In conclusion: There is a lot being show right in front of us in subtle ways. I look forward to what flavor foley has in store for us!
