4 Years of OCtober - Day 21 - Small
Grymme Dueldiach, a powerful axe wielded by those mortal few who are pledged to the Archfey of the Autumn Court, has found its way into the hands of Voirrey Yagher, the last of the old queen's chosen. Her court disbanded and fallen from grace, Loethengwael wears the form of an amorphous black cat, but still possesses enough of her magicks to imbue her mortal champion with the ability to summon Grymme Dueldiach and all of its strange powers. Like its queen, who cloaks herself in the mundane, the axe appears as a rusted vestige of an older world, and may change it's shape into a two-handed butcher's cleaver if its wielder is in need of turning whatever obstacle lies before her into meat.
We play a homebrew, but Voirrey’s class is based on the Hexblade - so here is her patron, as well as her pact weapon(s).
bust commissions
hey if ur still struggling w/ Voirrey's mask, what abt something that obscures the neck? like a hard plastic(?) mask over the top half of the face, then loose fabric draping down from it and bunching up around the neck and tucking into the shirt. could give a more animalistic silhouette from the side, and/or distort exactly how long her face is, depending on how it's designed
I have a rabbit hole I’m going down for her “main mask” since I made the first post, but I like what you’re puttin’ down and dig the idea of the fabric bunched around the neck. The cool thing about her is that she will, eventually, have a small suite of masks with different stats/abilities tied to them, so perhaps I’ll keep this in my pocket - so thank you! I wasn’t going to post this yet buuut...
The current design that I’ve found most compelling is the undead + animatronic angle, with the nosepiece kind of fusing into the teeth/palette area and the “flesh” part being decaying silicone/foam/etc.
I found the structure of this mask to be the most influential on my thought process, it’s from one of the masks/facial prosthetics from The Island of Doctor Moreau (Pretty sure the 1996 version, it looks pretty modern):
It’s got the surface/material that I’m gunning for. I also find that it sells the inorganicness without being so obtusely complicated as a lot of defunct animatronics are. And also this lovely piece, which MIGHT be from Crimson Peak, but I’m not sure - reverse google image search did not do me a lot of good.
The “crusty bits” will most likely be akin to decaying foam/plastic/whatever it is that you see on ghoulish old broken down animatronics, like this guy (probably from Dinosaurs, by the look of it):
Anyway this has been my creepy mask ted talk.
FALL COMETH. My inner Voirrey awakens now that PSLs and tiny pumpkins are starting to pop up. Release the beast.
Inktober, Day 4: Freeze (generously)
I suppose one could stretch "Freeze" into this, but, really, I just wanted to draw Voirrey and maybe repurpose this for a halloween flavored icon for twitter. A fun homage to one of the posters for Friday the 13th pt. VI.
Besides being my twitter icon for October, this is also the cover art for Voirrey’s character playlist on spotify.
I was going to do a companion image with Voirrey in her mask/with Grymme Dueldiach, but after I finished this one full body I realized that I deeply missed working in ink, and really didn’t want to paint anymore, haha. But I thought people might like to see her full-body design as well as how the mask, coined Automata Discordia, turned out. Once I get some stuff out of my hair, I’d love to do a diptych of her in and out of Slasher Mode.
We got some dry erase markers at the con to go with our battle mat, as well as some plastic tokens (Voirrey is the red one down at the very bottom, the cyan one is her ghost pal) and now it looks like a proper DnD Game, huh. I took these last time we played. The red/green and bloodsplatter dice are “Voirrey’s Set”, along with a blacklight reactive set that I’m going to repaint the numbers on. But these ones (called “Strawberry”) have that sort of fun, horror-pulp color scheme.
