Episode 1391: Songwriting Sara

Translator Notes:

So, in Japanese, the original joke here revolves around Sara calling Volenna “Volenna-san”, “-san” being a neutral honoriffic that’s normal to use with people on the street or acquaintances, but which would sound cold and distant when used between close friends.  In the fourth panel, Sara refers to “Volenna, my sun... Volenna... sun...”, the second time in English, the joke being that “sun” in English sounds like “-san” in Japanese, so Volenna mistakes what she’s singing as “Volenna-san”.

It would’ve been a perfectly reasonable translation to just directly translate things as “Volenna-san”/”Volenna sun”, but a) the pronunciation isn’t as exact and as obvious in English, and b) Granblue Fantasy’s official English localization doesn’t preserve Japanese honoriffics, so I try not to either.  Given that the title “Miss” would sound similarly distant among friends in English, I figured that would make a fine stand-in to make the core of the joke still work in English.

Also, one final note: Sara uses the word daisuki in the second panel in the beginning of the song, in reference to Volenna.  This can mean “I love you”, but it can also express a deep nonromantic fondness, as well.  I’m not that familiar with the exact dynamic between Sara and Volenna in Granblue Fantasy, so I erred on the side of ambiguity.

Episode 1222: Grand Blues! Legends #12

Translator Notes:

For those unfamiliar, these are all characters from the 16th-century Chinese novel Journey to the West, a (very) fictionalized account of the Buddhist monk Xuanzang’s journey to India in the seventh century.  I haven’t read the novel, myself, so I’m unfortunately unaware of whether this comic is making specific reference to events or themes in the novel, or if this is just yet another case of Jin being weird.

One other note: The Japanese text makes reference to the characters traveling specifically to Tenjiku, which is an archaic term for India, the real-world place on Earth that Xuanzang traveled to.  However, the word can also just mean something foreign, and it’d be super weird if India existed canonically in Granblue, so I just translated it as “a faraway land”.  I don’t know if this is the right call, but that seemed like it made more sense than saying that Sara is just straight-up traveling to India.
