Still stuck on rompers. I'm realising how nice they are for keeping my tinies in, especially the ones I'm still getting used to, because most of the major joints are left exposed and are thus easier to fiddle with.

Have a Peter+Nico pic. Peter’s face-up is his default from 2007!! And not a scratch on it, either. Never been re-sprayed. One thing about Volks’ default face-ups, they are tough.
So, nowadays, I’ve seen that people pay $50-$150 a pop for fancy natural fibre BJD wigs. As an oldie in the hobby, I gotta say... very pretty mohair wigs by Kemper and Monique have been around since before 2005, when I started using them for my dolls. And they cost about $10-25 each. I do like how style-able the natural fibre is, you can even dye it with regular hair dye. Four of my dolls wear mohair wigs (Shiina, Tatsue, Peter and Sui). Altogether, the four wigs probably cost less than one of those fancy alpaca wigs you see on Etsy. XD; (Then again, my dolls all have pretty normal-looking hair styles, so it’s not been that difficult to find conventional wigs for them.) EDIT to add: If there are other advantages to such wigs, please feel free to share them! I don’t own one so I wouldn’t know. ^^
Credits: Peter is a Volks Yo-SD Puff. His mohair wig is by Kemper and his glass eyes by 木啊木 (I really like these eyes, I might actually get the same ones for my LAKE Murphy). Nico is a Miyadoll Baby Mocha Bluebell. His wig is from MiuCat, glass eyes from YYM BJD. All clothing by me.
I’m pleased with myself, you guys. XD I wasn’t sure I could persevere though making four sets of exactly the same thing, but I did!
(Peter approves!)
The final product is fully-lined, except in the sleeves, and the raw edges at the arm-holes are completely hidden under the lining of the bodice. I find the neat, clean look on the inside extremely satisfying!
The bloomers are rather less exciting: the waist is flat in front and elasticated in the back, and I took the easy way out for the ruffled legs by rolling the hems and just gathering them with thread. :x
Here’s the usual list of things I learnt in the course of this project, along with more photos, under the cut:
1. I can make multiples! Yes, It’s worth repeating twice. I usually give up or get bored after making one of something. Maybe I’ll actually be able to produce a collection of items for sale at some point??
Also, I usually buy all my fabrics and trimmings in very small quantity, but I realised over the course of this project that making multiples of things really causes your supplies to dwindle in a flash - I’ve run clean out of clear snaps, light blue 4mm buttons, and even the outer fabric I used.
2. Setting in sleeves is fun! When making tops, I would previously attach the sleeve to the body, before sewing one long seam down the length of the sleeve, the underarm and then the side seam. This time, I sewed up the side seam, creating an arm-hole, and sewed up the length of the sleeve, before setting the sleeve into the arm-hole, with the bodice inside-out. The result looks quite similar, but I find it easier to gauge the ease on the sleeve cap this way.
3. I was able to practice my slip-stitch quite a bit. The arm-hole seams are hidden in the body lining, which is slip-stitched down over them. The back bottom hem of each smock also has a small opening (used to turn the smock right side-out after attaching the lining), which is slip-stitched closed. After four smocks, I still find it rather fascinating how the slip-stitches “disappear” as you make them. XD
4. I under-stitched a lining for the first time. Under-stitching is usually used on facings, to keep them sitting neatly, hidden behind the outer fabric. I used a line of under-stitching along the centre front, so that the white lining fabric wouldn’t smoosh out, and finally figured out whilst making the very last smock (Peter’s) that I shouldn’t under-stitch right to the bottom, otherwise it makes it tricky to sew the lining with the bottom hem... XD;
Shiina and I are now enjoying the littles in their cute matching outfits. They all look good in them, to my surprise - even Sui, it makes her look her age~ XD
(Nico’s white skin really plays havoc with photographs...)
Postscript: I consider this project only semi-complete, since I do have another tiny coming in who will need the pattern to be tweaked. I might also make them all matching sun-hats, and badges to denote which class they’re in.
One of the DoSH challenge shots - Peter trapped in our dryer. XD;; It was surprisingly difficult to pose him so that he wouldn't be knocked over when the door was closed.
I made a test hat, which Peter is modelling above, but I'm not really liking how it looks... It makes them look like they're 3 or 4, which is a bit younger than they are in my mind.
I think something structured would be better. I'll experiment. In the meantime, I'm making something for Sui with fabric that I bought specifically for her. :D
