Chiron W16 Spotlight 🔎 | #vrsociety Again it displaces eight liters, from a W16 arrangement with 4 turbos. But how did they get the 300 more horsepower over the Veyron Supersport without any electric assist? This was achieved via new turbochargers with a revised setup, a new intercooler system, and revised fuel injectors to keep up with all that airflow. The new turbos are controlled by a two-stage system, replacing the parallel system in the Veyron. You may know of this kind of setup as a compound system. What does this mean? Basically, instead of 16 cylinders feeding 4 turbos, and each turbo getting 4 cylinders, there will now be 16 cylinders feeding 2 turbos, each turbo getting 8 cylinders. Those 2 turbos will then feed 2 other, likely larger, turbos. This system helps mitigate the issues with smaller turbos, which is lack of top end performance, without introducing the shortcomings of a larger turbo, increased lag. At low engine speeds, below 3,800 in the case of the Chiron, intake air only gets compressed by the first turbo in the series. At RPMs above 3,800, intake air is compressed twice as it is sent through both turbos on each bank, allowing for more air to enter cylinders for better volumetric efficiency. This is how the Chiron gets the torque response of a smaller turbo, with the flow of a much larger one. To cope with all that air being shoved into the cylinders, the new W16 gets 32 Duplex fuel injectors to ensure proper fueling, no matter the situation. What’s the result? All of these design and engineering changes results in a peak horsepower number of 1478hp, and a basically flat torque curve. The engine makes 1,180 lb-ft of torque between 2,000 and 6,000 rpm.
