i just finished s8 of voltron last night and like. why does every character feel so out of place??? like why did they make lance’s character ALL about allura after they got together? i do enjoy allurance more than i thought i would during my rewatch up until s8, because all lances character revolves around is allura and that. just feels so icky to me??? why are we getting rid of his entire personality just because he got a girlfriend??
After reading the tittle many people will come to me complaining and shouting "VOLTRON ISN'T ABOUT SHIPS, GO DIE", I guess. But you know what? I have the fucking right to be disappointed by something and express my opinion, so if you don't like it, scroll away.
LONG POST WARNING!
Now onto the post. I'm really sad Klance isn't canon guys, and I mean, really disappointed.
When I was watching S7, I stopped right after the scene Allura blushes to Lance and I couldn't finish the season. I still haven't finished and probably never will. That scene just made me so sick, I couldn't understand why at that moment but now I see it.
It's because, it's such a harmful trope. Allura is liking Lance just because he was nice to her, not because they share interests or characteristics, neither because they make a great team. It's only due to Lance being a nice guy to her, and that's it. And, even if Allurance was executed better, I still wouldn't like it and you guys know why?
Because they're nothing alike each other. They're not compatible, these two are so different in terms of goals, ways of thinking and even what they enjoy doing that, seeing these two get together felt so wrong to me, and I felt so sick. I still feel sick about it. I think it's mainly because A//urance reminded me a lot of my first relationship and, as someone who dated a guy just because he was my friend and was nice to me, I can assure you guys these kind of relationships don't work. There's just so much more about romance, and constructing romantic subplots in stories, that building only a good friendship just isn't enough. So, I can only imagine Lance and Allura's relationship falling apart.
But I guess they won't do that, right? They'll still make this unrealistic couple happily ever after. Such a weird move for a show that claims to be realistic and dark and, how do they say, "about war" or stuff.
Now, moving on and onto the real discussion, Klance. Klance was my first LGBT ship, and I can say it changed my entire view about LGBT in general. I simply started liking them without knowing how to stop XD I guess many Klance shippers feel the same. But, it was mainly because they worked so well together. I saw those fanarts and those metas and those theories, and Keith and Lance as a romantic couple grew so naturally on me. I could see their potential and how each other could benefit from a romance, disregarding gender. But why I liked them so much in detriment of other canon couples you guys ask?
The answer is simple, they build one of the most compatible relationships of the entire show. Both share similar interests (becoming pilots), both are right hand mans, revealing their common characteristics (besides them constantly mirroring each other, showing their similarity), and their opposite differences complement each other, specially in team work, as this is shown by the show itself, and even with a clear statement by loverboy Lance himself, "we are a good team"
To make a good romantic relationship is to go beyond making a good friendship. Friendships don't exaclty mean relationships. Both Allura and Lance and Keith and Lance had great friendships, but the aspects I mentioned above are what make a friendship go beyond that into building a romantic chemistry. And Allura and Lance simply don't have that. They don't complement each other.
But I guess boy and girl friendships automatically means love... *sigh* And the showrunners made that very clear by developing Allura and Lance's friendship exactly the same way Keith and Lance's friendship was developed, but for some reason the first one is considered romantic progress... *shrugs*
So, I legit thought Klance would be canon. I legit thought they would be a surprise.
Because, aside from them making the most sense out in the show, the producers and voice actors kept teasing about it. Remember the drawing from LM, where they made Lance holds the LGBT sign with a nervous expression alongside Shiro? (Now that we know he's straight it feels so wrong...) Remember that interview where she straight up recongnises how compatible Keith and Lance are? (Meaning they saw the potential, but decided to go towards A//urance regardless) And how about that recent interview entirely about Klance where JDS said they are a natural progression? And right after that, telling about a similar dinamic in another series where the characters that parallel Klance eventually get together? And let's not talk about the fanarts they liked.
To sum it up, I legit thought they were teasing Klance like it would really be canon. And fans can't be blamed for it. The producers never acknowledged it, sure, but AL wasn't acknowledged but them either. It's funny cause, I trusted the EPs so much and A//urance seemed so out of the blue to me that I completely disregarded the possibility of them being canon. And to top it all they made all that teasing I mentioned above, allowing a second interpretation that KL would really be the path.
*sigh* I'm very disappointed. Not only did they fuck up with the romance subplots (with the exception of Hunay, but it was barely touched upon until S7) and LGBT rep, but only now I noticed how flawed and shallow was their story and how much character potential we lost. So I'm legitimately upset. They could've handled the whole shipping thing so much better. They could have at least clarified it wasn't going to be canon, but nope, they teased it instead.
But guys, these people are smart. Or do you think they wanted to lose over half their fanbase and popularity? They knew Klance was very very very popular.
So they used us as bait for their show instead.
So yeah, that's it. I'm just really disappointed by the show. I've become such a fan of it because of its characters, and Klance changed my view of things so much, but guess what? The characters weren't properly explored and developed, this including the relationships between them, and Keith and Lance's friendship wasn't fleshed out the way I personally thought it should have been. They composed one of the best team dinamics within the show, so even if they haven't made then love each other, I at least expected a proper development of their friendship.
That is all. I just wanted to vent my entire view about Voltron's romance subplots. In general, I think they suck. And the overall plot doesn't make it better either, since now it's mostly composed of emotionless fights, lack of character interaction, and use of flat drama for shock value.
And yes, I really think Klance had the potential to be one of the most amazing romances in cartoons, regardless of being gay or not.
Lmao folks are out here complaining that they hate Adam already after seeing half a minute of him through camera footage with the quality reminicent of a literal cabbage.
And besides that, said-footage simply showed Adam leaving Shiro, not with malicious intent, but because it hurt him to see Shiro putting himself in danger. You know... a common and justified trope found in relationships accross countless media texts.
Honestly, the real tea is that some people just can’t be happy if something doesn’t fit their personal desires/expectations. It’s such a shame too that people have to argue about anything and everything instead of enjoying together how fab and iconic the news is in terms of LGBT representation in popular media.
What are your thoughts on vld season 7? :3 id love to hear them!
Me?? My opinions?? :o Well golly!
*sets down tea, folds hands* Hmmm lets see, where to begin?
First off i’ll start by saying i still love Voltron, none of that has changed. Overall it wasn’t bad per say, but definitely my least favorite season of Voltron. There were a lot of things i felt unsatisfied with. This post does an amazingly accurate job of basically speaking almost all my thoughts and concerns for Season 7.
Recently i was talking with someone about this and one of the things we got stuck on was just the absurd amount of unneeded material that made up some episodes. “The Last Stand pt 1 & 2″, while very informative (and great in making me love Colleen “Mama” Holt all the more!), was imo so dang long i honest to goodness skipped though a lot of it—something i’ve NEVER done with Voltron before. I can’t help but feel it would have been better off having those episodes condensed to flashbacks.
(putting the rest under the cut cause this ended up being longer then i originally thought. :P)
So i know there was the big hoopla centered around Shiro and Adam, with the big announcement that was made about them an all that jazz, but to be honest again i was completely detached from the excitement of Shiro being conformed gay. Personal beliefs on the topic aside, i found it came completely outta left field. Like in a show where the majority of characters are dudes of course the fandom is gonna pair guys together (that’s something i’ve come to understand with all fandoms now), but when there’s no actual hints dropped previously to help lead up to this reveal, it makes it downright shocking once announced.
I’m considering writing a separate post on this particular subject, but for now that is just my own very condensed thoughts regarding that in a nutshell. ;P
And on the topic of Adam, everyone was so excited to ship him with Shiro because they’d been a couple at one point but like…why?
Looking at him purely from a character standpoint i disliked Adam a lot. The guy breaks up with Shiro instead of supporting him because the mission is dangerous, but its a mission that is of great importance to Shiro.
Now i understand that Adam was worried about him not coming back, but to be brutally honest that was still incredibly selfish; with his whole “if you do decide to go don’t expect me to be waiting for you when you get back”. He’s taking Shiro’s feelings to force him to choose between himself (Adam) and this once in a lifetime opportunity (which Shiro could definitely come back from alive). He said he’s been right beside Shiro through everything else, so the Kerberos mission offer couldn’t have come as a surprise to him (you’d have to work long and hard to be offered that kind of mission). Shiro knows his days are numbered, but he doesn’t want that to hold him back from achieving his goals. And instead of supporting and encouraging and believing in him to make it back, the guy just walks out on Shiro.
Ugh his character just gave me no room whatsoever to even sort of like him!
In other news, was not a huge fan of Shiro’s new arm. Like it’s cool for sure, but very big/round and just really wishing he’d get the regular human sleek design back. As unlikely as i’m sure that is. :’(
Ok geez i sound like such a sour puss but again, this doesn’t mean there wasn’t anything i liked about season 7. There was plenty actually! ;D
I was laughing so hard all throughout “The Feud”. Did that ep propel the plot forward at all, in any way? Or serve any other purpose then to be a filler? No, but it was downright hilarious nevertheless.
MATTHEW FREAKING HOLT!! I MEAN HOT DANG
Holt and McClain family reunions had my heart swelling
Keith and Krolia saying “i love you” was just UGH *sobs quietly*
Every scene Cosmo was in period
Keith x Axca ship is becoming a thing and my mind is BLOWN, like the ship that i never let sail cause i was afraid the fandom was right they were gonna be siblings BUT THEY’RE NOT, THEY ARE NOT AND I FEEL LIKE I’VE RECEIVED A GIFT FROM ABOVE
AJ Locascio as James Griffin = A++++
So yeah, the feelings overall were definitely not in Voltron’s favor this time around, but regardless i still love the show and will be there for the final season. :D
"It's like everyone ships Klance, ugh" Yeah well maybe we ship it for a reason? Like that they are the best-developed and most interesting relationship in the show and lots of signs point towards their bond only getting stronger in upcoming seasons?? Maybe people just like shipping couples with an interesting dynamic??? Maybe we desperately want some canon LGBTQ+ rep???? Maybe we have realized that Klance has a genuine chance of being endgame????? Maybe
Slight moment of negativity that im probs gonna delete later but imma ramble at you guys for a second and its probably not gonna make a lot of sense cos im shit at writing things in any sort of logical order but here we go. So like as fun as the "theres no character development" jokes are, im starting to wonder if some of you are misunderstanding what character development means. Sure part of character development is having conflicts change a character throughout the story or whatever but theres also a characterization piece to the process that if you pay attention, the writers are doing.
It seems like unless they dump a whole bunch of in your face info about the character on you, some of you get real pissed but like...character development that is all at once and obvious like that is actually, in my opinion, lazy writing. Subtle details that help build the character is sometimes better honestly. Think about it like meeting people in real life. If someone you just met were to sit there and tell you in great detail everything about themself, it might feel kind of awkward. As guilty as I am of oversharing like that, getting to know someone over time is a much better way to learn about who someone is.
So like for example the part where Pidge is giving Matt a tour of the castle you learn more about who Pidge is just from the way she interacts with her brother, and the things she considers important to show him, and hell even her room, her room is a fuckin mess! Through little details like these you start to get a better idea of who she is. Once you know her, itll make it easier to notice the big development when its happening.
And also, a character everyone tends to accuse of getting no character development is Lance and actually I kind of disagree with that. Does he get a lot of screen time? No. Definitely not. I want to see him more, i miss him. But he actually has come a long way since episode 1. He used to be just a loud, cocky, flirt who hated keith, but since that first season he's become so much more complex than that. He misses his family, he's unsure of himself and of what he brings to the team, he can be in a room with keith and they actually get things done and cooperate, he knows what to say to people to help them believe in themselves and can stay calm in some pretty high stress situations. If you showed me Lance from season 1 episode 1 and then told me "hey he's gonna help keith when keith is learning to be a leader, and then later hes gonna give allura a great speech and inspire her to believe in herself and her abilities and shes gonna save the day and hes not gonna take any credit for that." I probably wouldve laughed and been like nah thats not true. So like yeah they have been doing a lame job of giving the characters equal screen time, and yeah they are sleeping on Hunk i will give you that one, but the writers are actually doing a pretty decent job here.
So, in my everyday life I’ve seen a lot of colors. Yes, riveting content, I know, but there’s a point to this. Anyway, colors mean many things, ranging from emotion to stability to what people think when they see them. Different colors are associated with different emotions, and different emotions are associated with different colors. The two go hand in hand.
Colors can also be used to paint an accurate description of a character. Have you ever wondered why Superman’s color scheme is so eye bleeding? Well, look no further! His color scheme was specifically designed to be that way to paint a description of his character. But, since he’s not the focus of this post, we’ll just glide past him.
So, since colors mean things and I’m at a roadblock right now with writing, I’ve decided to do a little color study on Lance McClain from Voltron. Let’s see how close his color scheme can get to his actual, canon character, shall we?
So, right off the bat, we can see he’s heavy on the blue. He’s got blue jeans, blue accents, blue eyes, and his paladin suit is- you guessed it, Blue. Of course, this is because he’s the Blue paladin, but for the sake of this we’ll ignore that for a moment.
Let’s start with Lance’s jacket. The hood is white. White is associated with goodness, innocence, purity, and perfection. It has a positive atmosphere and can be associated with faith and hope. So, we can glean that Lance is a good, faithful person who has a positive atmosphere.
Lance’s jacket is mainly an olive green. Olive green is the traditional color of peace. Therefore, Lance is a person who hopes for peace.
Lance’s jacket also has grey accents on it. Grey is known to be a neutral color, symbolizing quiet, reserved, and subdued. It is associated with depression. But this doesn’t seem like Lance, right? Well, remember the episode Beta Traz, from season 2? In one of the scenes, we are given a sneak peak into Lance’s deeper thoughts, ones that revolve around his worth to the team. These emotions are almost never seen outside of that one scene (except when Shiro praises him), which shows that he is keeping these emotions to himself. Grey is also associated with RESERVED FEELINGS, AKA EMOTIONS PEOPLE KEEP TO THEMSELVES.
His shirt and shoes are also grey, which leads us to realize that while Lance is a hopeful, faithful person, he has some emotions he’d rather keep to himself.
Finally, his jacket has orange accents on the sleeves. Orange is a color combination, which combines the energy of red with the happiness of yellow. Orange is associated with enthusiasm, fascination, happiness, creativity, and determination. Therefore, we can glean that Lance is a creative, energetic, enthusiastic person who can borderline on comical. However, he is still quite determined.
(And while this technically isn’t one of his clothing colors, Lance’s hair is brown. Brown is associated with stability, but it ‘denotes masculinity’. This shows that Lance is more in tune with the so called ‘feminine side’ of life.)
Finally, we get to the blue. Lance’s eyes are blue. Lance’s jeans are blue. His shirt and shoes have blue accents. His paladin suit is blue. Blue is associated with depth, and stability, as well as trust, loyalty, wisdom, confidence, intelligence, and faith. It can also mean calmness, sincerity, and consciousness. This shows that Lance is a very stable person, loyal and trustful, confident and sincere.
Technically, his paladin suit is a lighter blue, which is associated with health, healing, tranquility, understanding, and softness. So Lance is a soft boy.
SO, to conclude, let’s recap. From what we have discerned from his color palette, Lance is a good person, faithful and enthusiastic. He is trustful and loyal, confident and sincere, but is also deeper than most people give him credit for. While he is silly and comical at times, he has more reserved emotions that he keeps close to his heart, while he wears his more outgoing (and friendly) characteristics ‘on his sleeve’ (lmao, jacket joke). He’s more in touch with his feminine side than others, but is also balanced by blue, which is known to be a more masculine color.
All in all, he’s a well rounded, comical character with a deeper side that most people overlook.

So, did I get his character right? While I’ve already watched Voltron, I tried to put my knowledge of his character behind me and draw a conclusion blind. So, please leave a note or something to tell me if I got it right.
This was actually really fun, and I’d like to do it again. If you would be so kind, please leave a note if you’d like me to do it again. I might regardless, but it’s always good to get some opinions first.
Hey guys! So, due to the positivity of my Lance color study post, I’ve decided to do another one.
But there are so many characters to choose from! Who shall I pick?
As of right now, there are 2 choices to choose from.
-Keith
-Allura
The reason that there are only 2 right now is that these things take time and I’m more inspired to talk about these two. Please add a note to tell me which one you’d like to see, and I’ll get right on it!
BUT this does not mean I won’t do other characters, because I will do them as well. It’s just at this moment these two are the ones I really wanna write about.
