Voltron

Okay, so. I hear a lot about our newest Voltron show. I've even started watching. With this, I've decided to remind people of how far this beloved show has come.

So: first up on my list is Keith, because of course.

Our mullet-haired friend is mostly the same in looks, beyond some upgraded art, and he's still our sweet, rebellious red paladin. Except the original Keith wasn't the pilot of the red lion, despite being the red paladin. In fact he was always the pilot of the black lion. Not once did he switch it up.

If Keith wasn't the pilot of Red, who was? Why, Lance, of course!

The only real difference between the Lances (besides the lions) are the hairstyles. Our new Lance is a light brunette with shorter hair. Admittedly, I can't say much about any of the characters personality-wise because I've only watch one episode of the new series and I haven't watched the original series in years.

Now for the blue paladins. Yes, paladins.

First up: Shiro. Or, as I better knew him as, Sven.

Now, as loathe as I am to admit it, Sven was probably my first fictional crush. He was the cool one, the natural leader. Although, in the original series, he did bend to Keith's leadership. If I remember correctly, he didn't particularly like being a follower and there were a few clashes within the team due to it. Besides that, Shiro and Sven couldn't be farther in looks. Shiro is big, muscular, with short hair, a white tuft, and a robotic arm. Sven is smaller all around with longer hair and no white or robot parts.

Secondly was Princess Allura. Yes, Princess Allura was a paladin.

Honestly, the two Princesses couldn't be more different in all but one way; they would each do anything to protect their people. Beyond that, the original Allura had golden hair, pale skin, dark eyes, and a living planet (low blow, sorry). She was also notably the pink paladin. While the colour choice was predictable it surprises me now that she was allowed to be able to be a paladin at all in such an old show. New Allura has blue-grey hair, darker skin, alteran markings and some vibrantly blue eyes (my gay is showing, shit).

4/10. Doesn’t look terrrrible but fuckboi behavior ruins him. Needs more respecting women juice.

Let’s Compare Voltrons

The Pidge clone episode.  Maybe.

Peter Cullen narrates the Force’s return from Planet Zal.  But that was two episodes ago and this definitely isn’t any episode confusion like Vehicle’s end since Jungle Woman is darn clear. 

Oh, it is after Mirai too.  But Zal and Mirai were too separate trips...

Passing through the Azure Quadrant, Hunk in yellow lion veers off course.  Hunk saved some kiddos on a nearby planetoid and after some banter he gets permission to go check in with them.

Voltron Force Pilot Color Error:

Pidge: 28

Lance: 3

Keith: 2

Allura: 1

Lance gets a doom-ship signal and the Force heads off to intercept to cover Hunk.  They also don’t bother calling him.

Over at Castle Doom, Cossack is trying to enter the throne room to no avail.  Lotor shows up and opens the door for him to display King Zarkon sleeping on the throne.  Or these are his personal quarters.  Lotor gloats he’ll be king soon enough, over Cossack’s advice for a peaceful family life.

Haggar shows up to call Cossack an idiot and gives him an evil assignment to capture Hunk.

Hunk flashes back to his days just out of the academy.  He was sent to the planet after Zarkon and Lotor ruined it.  Hunk, you had no idea who Lotor was until he started attacking Arus.

Past-Hunk gets robbed by Past-Kid who shares Hunk’s food with some other brats.  Hunk catches up to them and demands an explanation.  Leader Kid wants to fight but Hunk is Hunk and just grabs him and forces out that the kid doesn’t know space karate.  Hunk offers them food for service (and karate) in rebuilding the town and everyone does.

Also they’re orphans so...

Confirmed Dead People: 8 

Hello my old friend.

Galaxy Garrison gets some troubled readings in the Azure Quadrant.  It looks to be a transport but Commander Steel (as portrayed by some new VS and model) calls out to the Force.  He reaches Hunk and, after learning Hunk’s alone, urges him to rejoin the others.  But Hunk blows him off.  He’s on vacation!

Haggar gloats that the transport was a diversion that let her ship slip by.  Lotor and Zarkon are furious and Cossack’s squeaking like a frightened space rodent.  Then he flirts with her.

Yellow Lion lands on the planet and Hunk starts singing.  He exits from the lion’s... loading ramp?  Huh.  With his civvie clothes and huge packs of food.  Guess they do carry changes of clothes inside.

Hunk checks up the house but finds it empty and he gets all sad and stuff that they’‘ve forgotten about him.  But then they show up!  And Hunk shows he hasn’t forgotten his mad jump skills when he jumps right over the leader kid.

Haggar’s ship lands and scares off two of the kids’ fishing.  Cossack goes and enter Yellow Lion but can’t get it started because there’s no key.

Planet Doom’s New Wall of Failure:

Cossack the Terrible: 5

Haggar: 7

Lotor: 4

This is a failure for both for just not blowing yellow lion up.  Cossack leaves and Haggar calls him an idiot for not knowing about the ignition key.  They’ll scrap yellow lion for parts and Haggar calls Cossack an idiot again.  Cossack gets all mopey that everyone picks on him.

The fishing kids see Cossack and the doombots guarding the lion and run off to tell Hunk.  But they get noticed and run.

Hunk is telling some Voltron stories to the kids when the fishing duo return.  Also there’s nine kids now so...

Confirmed Dead People: 18

Hunk runs off to confront them but the kids want to help too!  After some passionate speeches Hunk and his brigade of child soldiers head off.

They recon Yellow Lion and form a simple plan.  Some of the kids will draw off the guards while Hunk heads into yellow lion.  This happens, but the kids get caught by a patrol before Hunk can get in and Hunk gives in to Cossack.

The rest of the Force are done but can’t contact Hunk.

Voltron Force Pilot Color Error:

Pidge: 29

Lance: 3

Keith: 2

Allura: 1

They head over to the planet in worry.

Cossack demands the lion key but Hunk hands it off to the girl accompanying him before he jumps down.

Voltron Force Pilot Color Error:

Pidge: 30

Lance: 3

Keith: 2

Allura: 1

Pidge gets a call from yellow lion but it’s scrambled.  Keith takes this as trouble and they hurry up.

The girl gets yellow lion flying and throws things into confusion.  Incidentally, this is the last lion to be piloted by someone else.  (Green was piloted by Keith early on; Allura took Red and Black out and Blue’s been piloted by six people.)

Haggar calls forth a fire-breathing spider Robeast that proceeds to immolate her own forces.  Great.

The Force arrives and escorts yellow lion into a safe landing then puts out some fires.  Hunk jumps back in yellow lion.

Voltron Force Pilot Color Error:

Pidge: 31

Lance: 3

Keith: 2

Allura: 1

Time for Voltron!

Voltron Forming Rallying Cry:

Let’s go Voltron Force!: 7

Only Allura and Hunk Do the Rallying Cry: 6

Voltron Formed: 7

Voltron tries to dodge but gets impaled in the stomach.

Voltron Force Pilot Color Error:

Pidge: 32

Lance: 3

Keith: 2

Allura: 1

Voltron frees itself with an insignia crest shot, then fifhgts fire with fire!  Before blasting its eyes with the ice ray.  Voltron leaps into the air, FORMS BLAZING SWORD and puts an end to this.

Robeasts Defeated: 8 

Planet Doom’s New Wall of Failure:

Cossack the Terrible: 6

Haggar: 8

Lotor: 5

And everyone good cheers for Voltron!

King Zarkon berates Haggar and Cossack for being utter failures while Lotor smugly looks on.

Then Peter Cullen narrates a chipper and happy ending.

so I decided to start watching 80s voltron and boy am I in for a wild ride

not even halfway through the first episode and haggar has already stolen allura’s soul, the ghost of king alfor showed up and took keith to face his childhood fears (he had gotten lost in the woods as a kid and thought the trees were demons and a lizard was a monster), and pidge just keeps growling. I don't think hes said more than ten real words
