I'm watching a film from 1924. 85 hours were shot entirely on location. Originally 42 reels, and 462 minutes long. Screened just once, for a dozen people, now it's considered a lost masterpiece. While at Universal, Irving Thalberg had fired Erich von Stroheim. Now as head of the post production at the new Metro Goldwyn (eventually MGM) studio the two were working together, again. Thalberg demanded it be cut down for exhibitors/consumers. It was cut to 2.5 hours. A financial disappointment, and until the 1950's it was considered a critical failure. Director, editor, producer, (co)writer von Stroheim, considered it his crowning achievement. Using continuity, and publicity stills Turner Entertainment was able to construct a 239 minute version, in 1999. A far cry from the original seven hours, 42 minutes, but I'm glad I am around to see it. Image via the #Wikipedia.
