charley, the doctor, and a vortisaur walk into a bar
transparent version under the cut
I've been listening to the 8th Doctor's audio dramas and decided to design what I'd like to imagine a Vortisaur looks like! >:o)
Ramsay the Vortisaur (scientific name: Pterosauria vortexfera) from the Doctor Who Big Finish audio: Storm Warning.
My design is based off of a combination of pterosaurs (and a few dinosaurs), namely Quetzalcoatlus (main body, wings, face), Ludodactylus (teeth and main head crest), Velociraptor (front arms), and Diplodocus (tail).
Personal headcanons:
1) Vortisaurs can change colors to match the different colors present in the Time Vortex/blend into the Vortex, similar to the way chameleons blend in with their environments. In a similar vein, Vortisaurs imitate star clusters, nebulas, and even parts of galaxies across their bodies from the various times and places they’ve been present in.
2) Vortisaurs are like the albatrosses of the Space-Time continuum, in that they can travel for months, years, or even centuries (relatively speaking) without stopping to land.
3) Vortisaurs are facultatively bipedal (can run on hind legs when they need to, but are generally quadrupedal for the most part (when they do land)).
(Eighth Doctor voice) oh no the vortisaurs oh no the web of time oh no
I was going to go to bed. Instead I started painting a vortisaur saying hi to my little vortisaur-obsessed freak Quenteth.
Thanks for request, @tardis-scooter! Here some silly sketches :p
Actually, i didn't expect to get so much requests of 13th (and as much of Brax too, lol)
This october 2021 I'll be drawing one monster or entity from the Eighth Doctor audios per day for 31 days (or at least try to)
Day 1 - Vortisaurs
what is your favorite alien species ?
I always wanted to know more about vortisaurs. Where are the adventures of Charley learning to ride Ramsey? Where is my audio adaptation flashback of Theta Sigma and Braxiatel learning to be jockeys, in the Academy. When will they return from the war show up in the reboot when the Doctor does something naughty? I just want to see a cgi vortisaur, your honour.
