Finally, you were ready. It was time. You took a deep breath as you stood in front of the towering double doors and braced yourself for the evening ahead. You felt your jaw drop as you gawked at the atmosphere around you. There were people everywhere. Men and women, dressed to the nines in various suits and gowns, all one of a kind and part of the latest trends. You couldn’t help but feel out of place as you stood there shuffling from heel to heel nervously. There was an area near the stage specifically for press and a excitement was being emitted from them. Questions of what the important announcement was, blinding flashes capturing the beauty from the other guests and gossiping murmurs contributed to a very ‘not-quiet’ buzz. You searched the room in an attempt to find a friendly face and spotted Jan standing in the corner, with a poker face plastered on as he looked out at the atmosphere.
Relieved to find someone that you knew, you walked up to him, careful not to trip over the long hem that swished around your feet. “Hi, Jan.” You called out, making sure that your voice was as cheerful as possible as you approached him. Turning to look at you, his jaw dropped in surprise as he stared at you. Nervousness began to fill your heart as you stared into his eyes cautiously. “Wh-what is it Jan? D-Do I look weird?” You questioned, looking down at the indigo and violet gown you were wearing. Your question was greeted immediately with Jan crying out in protest. “No Pr- Miss ________! Absolutely not! I-I was just surprised because..well...because you are positively the Belle of the ball Miss _______!” He beamed at you with flushed cheeks as you felt the blood rush to your own. “T-Thank yo-” but you were interrupted by the uproarious clapping that echoed around the hall as you turned in shock to see...Joshua and...Genevieve entering the hall. A sharp pain attacked your heart as you noticed the way that her arm was hooked in his, smiling brilliantly as flashes went off everywhere.
She wore a rose pink ball gown that fell in layers around her feet. It was decorated with the occasional blossom and ruffles, you wouldn’t even have been able to tell that it was once a 50 year old, traditional dress. It was beautiful. She was beautiful. And she looked perfect standing next to Joshua...like she belonged there. You slowly backed into the corner next to Jan as you desperately cast your eyes away, trying to ignore the aching pain that was eating away at your heart. “Princess...” Jan mumbled, looking at you worriedly before turning his eyes back to the royal couple.
As they took to the stage, the King and Queen greeted them with warm smiles and they exchanged bows and curtsies. Afterwards, his Majesty walked to the front of the stage and greeted his people with a warm smile, applause filling the ballroom once again. Seeing his motion, things quietened down and he began to speak. “My good people! It is my pleasure to announce that after 3 years of heartache, my son has learned to love again! I have gathered you all here today to celebrate his engagement to Princess Genevieve of Natasha!” His words were like daggers to the heart and each clap that greeted them were like extra bullets that shot you down. The photographers at the front were going crazy, desperately clamouring to ask questions. Tears began to prick your eyes as you finally brought yourself to look to the stage
Genevieve looked so...happy. The King looked so...happy. The Queen looked so...happy. Joshua looked so...happy.
As you stared at their smiling faces, your vision beginning to blur, you couldn’t help but think, Their Majesties were never THAT happy to see us engaged...maybe...maybe it’s better this way...maybe...Genevieve would be better suited to be his bride... but you were dragged away from your thoughts by a sudden voice that called out from the paparazzi section. “Your Highness! Please may we have a kiss?” Hearing his question, you looked up in alarm, the other chants and cheers being drowned out by the blood roaring in your ears as you focused on Joshua. Only Joshua. What’s he going to do?
You felt your heart race in anticipation...but not the good kind...you could feel yourself begin to feel nauseous as you saw him nod ‘okay’ and turn to Genevieve. For a split second, it was almost as if he had met your eyes but...that’s impossible...he’s just looking at Genevieve...his future wife...his Princess...You tore your eyes from the scene before you and whispered to Jan, “I’m sorry Jan but...I-I’ve got to get out of here...” and with that, you hurried to the exit, squeezing your eyes shut as you tried to avoid the sight of his lips nearing hers, her eyes beginning to close and cheers filling the room. With one pull, you exited the room, and pulled the doors shut, tears spilling from your glistening orbs as your heart ached like never before. “I can’t stay at the Manor...” you whispered, “...not tonight...” and with that, you ran off, down the hall to visit a place that you thought you’d never see again...
