India being born again
It's the voting day in my city (recently mine). I'm 31 and I've never voted before. Several reasons. The last time I remember feeling the rush about voting was in 1998-99, I was 16. I wasn't going to vote then ofcourse, but the pressure was similar on the country as right now..or what I felt back then. It was a tough war between Congress and BJP, everyone wanted the change from Congress, people wanted Atal Bihari Vajpayee. I remember clearly as I was in the process of forming an opinion about politics in this country. Somehow, it was not an easy win for BJP and they had to form govt.in a coalition. It was disappointing to know that the country still wanted Congress after knowing the history they've created. BJP was made to face tough events like Kargil and attack on Parliament, for it to fracture, and eventually be voted out in the next elections. Back then, somehow I began to lose interest in the politics as somewhere I began to believe Congress is a mafia we'll never get rid of. People did not have any other choice. In midst of distracting adolescence and new life of college and career the political aspect and my patriotism took a back seat, over those years I lost sight of any person around me who was remotely concerned about who gets their vote or whether the country is developing for better. We all somehow just got comfortable at the increasing prices and unaccounted for constructions in the name of development, bad experiences with every govt. Organisation, obvious bad govt.decisions and policies, inconveniences in daily life. About politicians having swiss accounts, scams in billions. We simply got used to it. Because I didnt hear anything too urgent in 2004 or 2009, neither did I see anyone ever asking me to vote, as they weren't going to. Finally due to social media advent in India, people came to know from independent sources about how really bad govt. has been affecting us. Something so obvious, was loud and clear - be careful who you vote for, or at the least even vote! Many still are blinded about how Congress isn't a shame to us, being ruled by someone from Italy is completely fine. Someone who has no vision or idea about our needs is good enough, afterall British were here too. But it has been a good sign otherwise, the country has grown some spine and is aware of its potential, is willing to fight back for its lost identity. This time people were determined to vote, there were people going door to door to get you a voters' card, and then reminding you promptly to go and vote ... So so humbling. Something has changed in my country, and my heart is full. Apart from all fights and arguments with friends and family about who to vote, all is okay as long as we went and cast that vote. I am so glad to have voted and be part of this change.
