Never underestimate the power of practice. Your first time doing something will always suck, but by your hundred and fiftieth you’ll be impressing people pretty regularly.

I’m facing a little dilemma that was brought to my attention again recently. During my twitch streams I often like to listen to my favorite music, which is no issue at all for the live broadcast but inevitably some of it gets muted in the twitch VODs and still more/different segments get muted if I upload to YouTube.

The big problem is this: even if I wanted to edit my playlist to avoid muting, I would need to comb through every VOD of every broadcast I’ve ever done and have yet to do in order to identify which tracks get muted in a continuous pruning process to make sure everyone is happy (except me, with this pile of offline work to do between broadcasts).

I’m really torn, because I want to make my content accessible to everyone but at the same time doing that means this big chore and probable loss of tracks I really like working to.

The only workable compromise I can think of is if one or more viewers (probably the ones affected most by muting) report their findings to me so that I can start building a broadcast-safe playlist. So last night I dreamed I was taking a weird literature class about story/mechanics combinations in video games. I was playing a first-person rail shooter paired with a short story about a woman attempting suicide. In the moment, the story and gameplay seemed to match each other perfectly, though thinking about it awake I'm not sure why. I don't even know what the targets were. Maybe the Pleasantvilleness of the town she lived in. (There was another game/story pairing, played by someone else in my dream, about a guy who cares about the woman in the story I read and helps her not die. I think that went with a building game.) Anyway, I thought I'd put this here and see if there was a discussion to be had about teaching ludonarrative effects as part of either literature or game design. If I were a literature teacher, I'd definitely try to include some narrative-heavy games in the curriculum.

This last week of day job work was pretty slow except for a few shipments, but a new box of foam brushes meant more of that fun, thin cardboard. I’d just caught up on the latest page of Dregs before work, so when I had a moment, two and two made four, as they say.

I also really like poor Chubs - he’s got a literally crappy job, and there’s a ‘days since last corpse found’ sign in his boss’s office. And yet he still goes to work.
