Some musical partnerships work differently than the others. For instance, both Sakamoto and Noto were already established by the time they decided to do something together, yet I feel their debut showed they could still surprise us. Sure, the shock is lesser, if you understood what each of them did before on each own, though the results of their work still astounds us with a certain laissez-faire attitude we couldn't have expected from neither of them at that stage of their careers. Yes, I agree, Sakamoto rarely took anything for granted – he was never resting on his laurels –, while Noto also kept looking for a variety of ways through his soundscapes despite him being much closer to minimalism than some would admit.

Alva Noto and Ryuichi Sakamoto’s first two projects found themselves at the frontiers of frequency. A sailing boat deftly traversing the airwaves, each touch of the rudder and push of the mast venturing towards sounds rarely heard elsewhere.
