I often see people talk about the way Shelby is treated as the “little sister” and I don’t know what to say about it cuz I genuinely can’t tell if they’re criticizing the fans for it or pointing out the intentional reasons behind it (could be both at different times or something, it’s not like it’s all the same ppl)
Cuz like. I see Shelby as the little sister. And yes, it is mostly cuz she is the younger one IN TERMS OF VAMPIRISM. And people point out that it is infantilizing and such, which is to me THE POINT? Everyone in the series is always treating her as a sweet innocent naive girl who needs help despite the fact that she is a grown woman with more maturity than a lot of other characters tbh. And to me that treatment sets her as the little sister of the family, since those also get treated in such ways despite being their own capable people. Also she could not be the older sister that is a whole other archetype. And she is the favorite which is such a little sister thing too.
“Oh but it’s not as wholesome as being the favorite-“ YEAH! I KNOW! People criticize assigning these characters nuclear family roles as if that makes it More Wholesome than it is. THE REASON I’M DOING IT IS BECAUSE NUCLEAR FAMILIES CAN BE VERY PROBLEMATIC AND THE VAMPIRE FAMILY IS A PERFECT EXAMPLE OF THESE SORTS OF ISSUES. I have a lot of feelings about the vampire coven as a family. I need everyone to see the toxic forced family with me it’s beautiful. People say “it’s not found family it’s forced family” and that’s exactly why I see it as family, because family is forced and not something people are often able to choose!!! (This makes it sound like I have family issues. I don’t. At least not so much. But you can observe a lot from others).
Anyways. I actually fully believe and headcanon that Shelby is older than Pyro. She is still his little sister to me due to their roles in the coven. I think the fact (er, headcanon,) that she’s actually older than him actually enhances how messed up it all is (for both of them tbh-). I also love the idea of everyone getting really used to the little sister older brother dynamic only for one of them to drop their age and all their family illusions get shattered as they realize Shelby is the older one. Idk how they recover from this completely inconsequential realization.
