Vulcan's Forge, Oil on canvas (1630) Diego Velázquez (Spanish, 1599–1660) captures the moment from Ovid’s Metamorphoses when the sun god Apollo enters Vulcan's workshop, bringing news that Venus, the wife of the blacksmith god, is committing adultery with Mars.

The artist focuses on the shocked expressions of Vulcan and his helpers while using a realistic style to ground the mythical event in a dusty forge. Every figure shows a unique reaction to the sudden gossip that interrupts their heavy labor. Velázquez painted this work during his first trip to Italy as a study of human emotion and the male form. Description

Aeneas receives new armor through the intercession of Venus in the smithy of Vulcan. In the middle, the hero kneels before the goddess. A Cupid hands him the helmet, in front lie the other parts of the armor. Putti tumble through the air, one with a laurel wreath. On the left, four smiths work over a fire.
