Beefed: You’re just…a big athletic dude, bro. Your body has always been your most reliable ally. In school, you threw yourself into every team and club that would take you. That was back when you were still under the illusion that your father could learn to love you if only you were a little more successful. Rock hard, rippling muscles have never been much of a boon to you in the lab, but they’ve been handy in this second life of yours. You’re by no means a specialist. Where others have honed themselves into knives, you’ve always been a blunt object. You cannot offer cutting accuracy and skill, but you can lift very heavy things. Sometimes, that’s all you need.
WHAT IS A REVENANT BUT A BODY DEFIANT? “I refuse to die,” it says, “but I will not really live either.” If this is mercy then you don’t deserve it, but you have to admit, it feels pretty close to damnation. Your life is an error that you’ve spent all your numbered days trying to correct. Now you’re trapped in it. But if the cage of your body refuses to let you go then you might as well make use of it. There is no redemption for an animal like you but that does not excuse you from the obligation of the attempt. You will make yourself into a shield. It’s all you have to give.
DOVE﹒IF YOU SWEAR THAT IT’S TRUE, I HAVE TO BELIEVE
You don’t know what to make of him. He calls himself a speaker of the divine but what you call god feels too immense to speak with a human mouth. The part of your brain that still thinks in terms of hypotheses and evidence cannot help but doubt him. But so much more of you wants to believe that something sacred can still exist in your life, so close you could reach out and touch it. You could speak to it. Your heart cannot afford any more of your mistakes. What you need is a guide, someone to direct you like a sword. It could be him, if only you could be certain his faith is more than delusion. The person you are trying to be wants to believe, but the person that you really are needs to test his claims first.
DOE﹒TWO INCOMPARABLE SOULS, BOUND TOGETHER BY DEBT
You helped her once, and it cost you. You don’t regret that, but…you do wish that she were different. She lives only to serve herself and her own interests. It’s doubtful that she’ll ever do anything solely for the benefit of others. By extension, that means you haven’t done much good by saving her either. Well, you haven’t done any good for anyone but her at least. It’s not fair of you to expect her to do something more with the chance you’ve given her, but you’re cruelly aware that nothing is ever fair. Why should you be? Her particular brand of selfishness grates at your nerves. She moves through the world with the confidence of someone who has always been certain their own existence justifies itself. That kind of self-assurance is completely foreign to you. You cannot help but envy it, just a little.
