One thing I actually do appreciate about Junji Ito is he really is not afraid to do whatever comes to mind. I believe in an interview that was asked about the meaning behind one of his mangas and he basically said "I just thought, wouldn't it be kindof fucked up if this happened?" Like if you are an avid fan of his you KNOW that like a good portion of his works are kindof just... eh. He toes the line between absurdism and horror and occasionally some stuff just kindof comes off more goofy than disturbing. But I think by doing that he really is able to just get his ideas out there until one really stands out (uzumaki, amigara fault, my dear ancestors, etc). In an age of people sort of demanding that horror media always be a metaphor for some deeper concept, I appreciate that Junji Ito is sometimes like "I just thought this would be an upsetting concept". There's a validity to asking the question "what if this really disturbing, absurd thing happened, how would people and society react to it? What would be the actual implications of a very simple, gross concept like the necks of buried bodies getting longer and longer in the earth? How would the person experiencing this deal with it or explain it to others?" I think horror media with these ideas are the ones that really push the genre forward.
