a question(able) poem + experimenting w visual elements ft. van gogh’s cafe terrace at night (1888) and one of his sunflowers paintings (1889) [image ID under the cut] | vans bano

Image ID: 6 square panels with text and images on a white background. They feature two paintings by vincent van gogh. One is ‘Cafe Terrace At Night’ which shows a scene at an outdoor cafe, with a yellow wall running along the left side of the painting. Tables have been laid out surrounded by people. Beside the cafe is a road, on which some more people are wlaking, a building, and a tree on the front right side. The sky is dark blue with stars. The other painting is ‘Sunflowers’ which is almost entirely in yellow and orange tones. On a yellow wall is a table in a darker shade of yellow. Atop the table is a vase which has many sunflowers in it. Some are blooming and some are wilting.

Panel one: Both paintings side by side in the center. There is text at the top and bottom. Text on top says: “what is an image in relation to its parts? how does an image change when it is cut up, overlapped, zoomed in, lost from focus, too big, too small, distorted, recoloured?” Text at bottom says: “how does an image find its way back to itself?”

Panel two: On the right is the painting of the cafe, edited to look as if small square pieces are missing from it. Small squares showing bits of the painting are floating all around. Text towards the left-center side says: “how well does a piece of an image represent the image itself? / what happens to an image when it no longer feels complete? / how is an outsider’s interpretation of an image altered when they cannot see all of it?”

Panel three: A few small pieces of the sunflower painting, overlapped with patterns such as diamonds, dots and intersecting lines that form rectangles. Text says: “do you see yourself as disjointed aspects/ hyperanalysed into an illusion of wholeness? / where are your missing pieces? / do you remember what all of you looks like?”

Panel four: The sunflower painting, edited to look like its been spliced into vertical lines of varying widths which are in close proximity so you can still make out the image as a whole. Text at the top and bottom says: “are you only able to see yourself one piece at a time? / how do these pieces interact, inform, infuse into and influence each other to complete the picture of you?”

Panel five: The cafe painting, divided into 16 small pieces arranged like a grid, but the pieces are in a jumbled manner. Text on top and bottom says: “what if you aren’t the neatness of cleanly cut corners, but the unity of a handmade collage? / aren’t you greater than the sum of your parts?”

Panel six: Two circles containing the cafe and sunflower paintings each. Both have been edited to look contorted, misshapen and twisted, as if being viewd through one of those funny mirrors. Text says: “how much are you twisting your worldview/ to protect a lie a person or a system told you about yourself? / what will it take for you to believe your manifestation of yourself over others’?” End ID.
