But. Ace attorney has a Magic System. You summon ghosts in court, but not just summoning ghosts, your best friend becomes possessed by ghosts. There is a village dedicated to the traditional culture of the people who summon ghosts, called Spirit Mediums, and there is an incredibly amount of magic political drama. It is Literally like those period soap operas where the like, third in line for the throne is trying to assassinate the heir. This is a fantasy series and not just because of the "Interpretation" of the Japanese legal system.
Which is WILD. BY THE WAY. For one, it is implied that many of your clients are going to get the death penalty (some people are seen in jail, but some people are also seen to be dead.) There is no innocent until proven guilty. just. at all. You need to find someone to put in your client's place, you can't just prove them innocent, and you need to do so within three days. And the police are Super Corrupt (tm), down to a well-meaning but often incompetent detective and your Intentionally Corrupt Ex-Bestie. The fourth game actually sort of goes in on that This Takes Place In A Dystopia w a bit darker of a tone because it DOES.
... some people say that it's an Intentional Commentary On The Legal System, and the dev says that he just doesn't know anything about the Japanese legal system, but thought the concept of a court game was interesting, which is very funny to me. This isn't to say to not make a game about politics political. I love it when people do this. Thank you aa creator for your horrible dystopian ideas of how the legal system works you've managed to make a bad thing worse
Oh. There's also a magic rock given by your friend that you can use to see into people's hearts to see if they're lying. There are more lawyer superpowers later on, but I do like the original.
The ace attorney lore is just wild. It means so much to me. There is also no such thing as self defence, there is no claims of BEING A CHILD, or any other like... I was not in control of my actions / didn't know what I was doing defences. QUITE LITERALLY. ABOUT POSSESSION. It is so black and white. And I love it. My perfect little horrible legal dystopia.
