A/N: Had a pretty busy day today so this one is very much on the rough side. Not sure if it fits well with the prompt in the end, but I do enjoy some elements from it... might look into it once my mind is back to me just to spruce things up a bit (it’s hard making all these things in a week! ^^;)

waava week (2016) // day 6 · wisdom

Wan stood proudly, hands poised triumphant at his sides as he faced front, gaze strong and fixed ahead.

“So, uh… how’s it coming?” he asks, leaning over slightly in an attempt to see the carving the air monks were making. The monk to the side of the carver steps forward immediately, hands hidden in the folds of his sleeves.

“Please, be still, Wan.” The monk says. “We are nearly finished for today.”

“That’s good,” Wan replies, going back into his original position. “I don’t know how long I’d be able to keep this up. It’s been, what? Four hours already?”

“This is not nearly as long as some of our other sessions, but it will do for now.” The monk says. “Carver Sumi will need to have you come by tomorrow for another session. There is still much to be done before the statue is complete.”

Wan sighs softly, blowing the hair from his face.

“Do not be so rude, Wan.” Raava says, her voice echoing in his mind. “The monks have given you a great honor by making this statue for your efforts to bring peace to the world.”

“I know, I know…” Wan mutters under his breath. “I just didn’t think it would take so long.”

The monk peeks out from behind the statue. “Did you say something?”

“Nothing!” Wan says quickly, stepping from the platform. “I’ll see you tomorrow, Sumi.”

“Be here by daybreak,” the old carver says. “We have a lot to do.”

Wan nods, hurrying out the door.

Wan sighs into the dimming night sky, feeling the cool air of the mountains fill his lungs. It had been years since he and Raava faced Vaatu, many more than he cared to count. Since then he’d spent his time trying to bring peace and balance to the new world of men, but sometimes it was just too much – fights and battles, one after the other – even he needed to take a rest from all of it.

“The Nomads sure picked a great place,” he says, looking out to the valley below. “It would be nice to live here.”

“You could,” Raava says. “If you would only settle on a place.”

Wan bits the side of his tongue, leaning into a rail beside the path.

“Not a chance,” he says. “You’d be too bored.”

“Hmph.”

Wan grins, and soon the sound of distant laughter catches his attention as a small boy and girl come running along the path. They stop at the sight of him, staring until an older man comes running up the path as well.

“Good, you’ve stopped,” the man says, pressing a hand into his chest. “You shouldn’t leave me behind like that, you know—Oh!” The man stops as his eyes land on Wan. He bows immediately, arcing his arms in front of him. “It’s an honor to meet you, sir.”

The girl tugs on the man’s clothes.

“Bau, who’s he?”

“This, Momo,” the man says, placing a hand against the child’s back. “Is the man who fought alongside the Great Light Spirit, Raava.”

“When did he do that?” Momo asks.

Bau laughs. “Many years ago,” he says. “Before you and Maku were born. Since then, he has dedicated his life towards the peace of mankind.”

“Is it true you can control all four elements?” the boy, Maku, asks.

Wan chuckles at the question. “Yes, that’s right.”

“Wow!” the boy exclaims. “You must be super strong!”

“Can you show us?” Momo asks.

“Don’t pester him now,” Bau says. “I’m sorry, sir, I’m sure you’re very busy.”

“No, it’s alright,” Wan replies, weaving some wind in his hand. After he gets the wind circling smooth and precise, Wan jabs his foot into the ground, shooting up a piece of rock. It lands in his open hand, and he begins to move it with the air, slowly, above his palm. Next he draws some droplets of water hanging from a plant nearby, and adds it to the rock. Then, with a flick of his finger, he lights a small flame above his fingertip, and rotates that as well. All four elements – rotating in harmony.

“How’s this?” Wan asks, holding it out to the kids.

“So cool!” Maku says, jumping up and down. Bau smiles, placing his hands together to bow one more time.

“We are truly honored to be in your presence, Great One.”

Wan laughs, his cheeks flushed with embarrassment. “Please,” he says. “Just call me Wan.”

He looks down to see Momo pulling against his robes.

“Can you show us another trick?”

“No, come along now,” Bau says, nudging the kids along. “We’ve taken too much of his time already.”

“Aww….”

Wan smiles, watching them leave. He chuckles softly, turning slowly in his place as a hand rubs the back of his neck.

“’Great One’, huh? They’re acting like I’m some sort of… wise old being that would sit on top of a mountain all day.”

“You are wise,” Raava says. “And noble, and strong…”

“I’ve made a lot of mistakes,” he runs a hand through his hair. “More than I can count.”

“And you’ve made efforts to fix them,” she replies. “That is the act of greatness. You’ve done more for the world than they could possibly know.”

“We’ve done it,” he says. “I wouldn’t have made it anywhere without you.”

“Nor I you.”

“You would’ve never said that when we first met.”

“I have said it now,” she says.

Wan smiles gently, looking to the horizon.

“It’s been a long time…” he says. “There’s still so much to do.”

“We’ll do it together.”

“Just like always.”
