If you're sticking by my side, maybe we can be okay
(Inspo: One / Two)
“Hitched, you say?” Matt considered his friend’s words. He liked the idea! “We’ll see!”
“Or who knows, maybe Julius and Leo are going to do it first? They’re living together now too. Or even Frankie and that girl I’ve been seeing him around the city with. No kidding, it seems our timid little Frankie really broke out of his shell this summer. Every time I saw him around in the city with her, they were like two lovebirds.”
“I’m truly happy for all of them,” Matthew told him, a little awkwardly. He knew Frankie was probably in the right to be upset with him, after he and Terra got together. But he wasn’t going to dwell on this for too long.
“Say, you two grow your own produce and herbs now, right?” Wade asked. “Friend to friend, do you think you could grow some stuff for me? Not for free, of course.”
“Yeah, of course!”
“Good, good. I tried to buy from the local potions shop, but it was a weird experience. I swear the shop girl hated my guts for showing up and buying from them. Like, what’s the deal with that? Don’t they want customers?”
“Oh boy! It’s that bad? Don’t worry, yeah, you can get everything you need from us. But man, do I feel bad for Jed...” Matthew shook his head. He understood what Jedediah was trying to do by putting his daughter to work, but at this rate, he won’t have a shop for much longer.
How could you hurt a little kid? I can't forget, I can't forgive you 'Cause now I'm scared that everyone I love will leave me
While Terra was at work the next day, Matt took some of their produce into town to sell it. After he quit working at Aleister’s, it turned out there was quite the demand for good produce in Moonlight Falls and the two of them were only too happy to provide.
Walking through the park, he was surprised but glad to see a familiar face.
“Yo! Wade! You’re here?”
“Been here for several weeks now,” the young man laughed. “As soon as things calmed down in the city, I wanted to come here. But you know how I am. I couldn’t leave until I knew I did all I could to help out.”
“So the new school’s coming along?”
“Oh yeah! It’s looking good already. And so are you, man! You’re pretty much glowing. Life here’s treating you well, I see?”
“Not too shabby, I’d say. You look rather happy yourself,” Matt laughed. “Are you and Carly?”
“Official. Finally. I guess, with all the craziness going on at the school this winter, we’ve both decided life’s too short and unpredictable to beat around the bush.”
“I can strongly agree with this,” Matt nodded.
“No kidding, you can!” Wade laughed. “You moved across the country to be with a girl. How’s Terra by the way? Heard you two live together now.”
“For nearly two months now,” Matt told him.
“At this rate, you two are going to be hitched the first out of our class.”
“Do they have a working phone from inside that house?” Wade asked the obvious.
“They do. And we’re keeping an eye on it,” Gordon reassured him. “Surprisingly, there haven’t been any outgoing calls from Rodion or the Osmonds. And Maera has more pressing issues right now, than to make phone calls, what with all of her relatives royally angry at her.”
“I’m kind of surprised Karina’s been this absent from the operation up to now,” Wade pointed out.
“Me too. She’s a powerful witch, I wonder what she’s up to,” Gordon agreed. “Come to think of it, I don’t believe anyone’s seen her around for some time.”
“Well, she did call me, back when they were still pretending to be skiing,” Polina remembered. “But not since we’ve discovered what the family’s been up to.”
“Interesting...” Gordon wondered what the significance of the timing was.
A knock on the door interrupted them.
“Is it Toris?” Wade asked. “I thought she was going to stay with the Medranos?”
“She is,” Gordon turned to the door. “Everyone be ready.”
Everyone was on guard as he opened the door.
“You!? Where the hell have you been?!” Wade asked. “We thought you were a goner!”
Meanwhile, at the other end of town.
“You gonna be ok? Or do we need to restrain you again?” Atherton asked Polina, who now sat quietly, half-seething, half-embarrassed for her earlier behavior. He was still kind of amazed at how much strength and raw spite was hiding under her girly demeanor.
When they apprehended her brother, she thought she’d be ok simply keeping an eye on him, considering she knew his behavior as well as anyone. But it turned out she didn’t know her own behavior - all it took was for Tikhon to say one of his usual idiotic opinions and she was ready to throw down with him.
It took both Atherton and Wade to restrain her from punching the daylights out of the guy.
“I’m sorry,” she apologized, still deep in thought. “I don’t know what came over me. Perhaps I’m not the best person to keep an eye on him.”
“No need to apologize,” Gordon understood. As someone who’s known this family for some time, he could’ve told anyone the relationship between the siblings was less positive than first appeared to the eye. He supposed she didn’t realize that fact until faced with the young man today. “It’s fairly natural for emotions to get the best of people in situations like this one. It is best for you to keep clear of him for the time being, though.”
“I agree. I’m sorry I hit you guys,” she apologized.
“Apology accepted,” Wade chuckled. In her shoes, he would’ve done the same.
“Ditto,” Atherton agreed.
“Has there been any news of my mother, by the way?” Polina asked.
“No, but we know she’s not at the old house,” Gordon answered. “It’s safer to assume she knows something didn’t go according to plan during the exchange, by now.”
“Is the boy ok for it?” Gordon asked when they came in. “I thought it was just Terra?”
“I figure he’s already involved in this, since the impostor involved him in the hunt. He might as well see what all the hubris is about,” Boris explained.
“Alright then,” Gordon shrugged. “Come on.”
“Is it far?” Terra asked, at which Gordon gave a small chuckle.
“No, not in the slightest.”
“So, how are you settling in?” Wade asks while the three of them give Boris and Gordon some privacy. “Nothing troubling happening?”
“Uhh…”
“Well, Dad already blew up at Poli because he thinks she’s a traitor. I don’t buy it,” Helena fills him in.
“Oh… Well, I kind of see how he’d think that. Although, honestly, I don’t buy it either,” Wade admits. “Your cousin is a major goody-two-shoes. I mean that in a good way.”
“I know exactly what you mean. She wouldn’t even let people cheat on tests. I can’t see her getting into some weird plot without giving it all away by her expression alone.”
“Look, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to cause all this trouble,” Dahlia apologizes. “I just wanted your Dad to know what’s happening.”
“I understand,” Helena sighs. “I guess it’s just all really bad timing. I just wish she’d answer her phone.”
