I just watched We’re All Gonna Die and URGHHH it is SO SO GOOD. I have so many thoughts about the main characters, especially how they fit together with their grief, so spoilers below!!
If you haven’t watched the movie yet / are unaware of it entirely, here’s a small little synopsis:
After an alien “Spike” caused irreversible damage to the world, it has remained in earths atmosphere causing strange events and situations the more it “jumps”. The movie follows Kai-grieving emotionally raw EMT who recently lost his best friend, and Thalia- a beekeeper pushing past the grief over her husband and daughter- as they travel across the pacific west to find their teleported car and bees because of the Spike. This grief, specifically, is what pulls them together and is SO INTERESTING !!
Kai’s grief is fresh- noted in the truck scene, Dave’s funeral was just 2 weeks ago, and supposedly only lost him recently before that. He is /actively/ grieving- he’s spiraling and lost without his friend, and with the current situation he’s in reminding him constantly of the road trip he didn’t get to have with him. He’s raw, he’s emotional, and is constantly stuck in the past and “what could’ve been”’s. This inability to move on causes him to ignore the present, and thus cannot move on from his friends death and find happiness.
Compare this with Thalia, who is the complete opposite of Kai. Thalia’s family died 6 years ago, but instead of letting herself grieve, she drowns herself in work and supporting herself, also ignoring the present and focusing on the future. She refuses to give herself a break, as if she does she’ll break down under the stress of it all. This bottling of her emotions causes it to show itself in anger and frustration (ex: the slamming of the phone, throwing the Queen bee in the river <I actually have more thoughts about that but anyways!>, lashing out at Kai fixing the tire, etc). While her grief is almost completely opposite Kai’s and vice versa, I think it’s why they become so close to one another.
They offer eachother a unique perspective to eachothers grief that the both of them need in order to move on and become happier people. Thalia has been so focused on pushing forward that she hasn’t given herself the chance to really work through her emotions and let out the hurt she’s been carrying for years. Kai offers her the chance to actually /feel/, get a good cry out, and acknowledge that it’s okay to grieve these people you loved so much. On the other hand, Kai is so focused on the death itself that he’s blinded by it, which is where Thalia comes in- she gives Kai stability, and allows him to grieve, but also to focus on the present and what will happen in the future. She gives him the space to grieve and grieve with him, and reminds him that not everything is death and destruction- there are good things that will happen, and need to happen with him.
tldr: Kai and Thalia are both two sides of the same coin that is grief and loss. They learn from each other how to process this grief, and thus how to move on as people and live happier lives.
to be honest i wasn’t that desperate to watch We’re All Gonna Die until i saw the trailer for it (that i still can’t find again) where jon was tied up gagged and getting stabbed and disembowelled by, of all people, spencer agnew. so then i knew i had to see this for myself and that episode turned out to be one of the best ones out of the eight.
(scene was even better in the episode itself since you can hear jon’s muffled screaming, and spencer’s small effort noises during the disembowelling. it was very good)
guy who didn’t like musicals remount got me on a jon matteson binge which led me to we’re all gonna die and now i’m obsessed with that instead but also jon matteson in his various nothing npc roles for wagd. anyway here’s my personal ranking of the episodes in order of least to most fav.
the audience < crown the coral king < no fog can hide < grief echoes wide < all spirals bind/plunge the blades < eyes open the path < and drown the heart
i really love spencer’s comedy usually but i didn’t feel like he was really playing anybody in The Audience so his performance kinda turns me off of the whole episode. when he has a bit of a costume though he makes it work like he does in And Drown The Heart. my fav episodes are probably the ones where the cast’s characters came through the strongest to me.
