the way that clark friendship really was keeping lex's darkness at bay not in terms of any 'evilness' inside him but in terms of the depression isolation complete and utter rejection from the world lex feels without it woof man. and it's too late (or feels too late) because of lex's own choices and actions that have driven him to acts he thinks clark could never forgive but also he's so furious at clark that he wants clark to be the one crawling back on his knees so he's unable to swallow his pride and accept clark's anger at him and make real efforts to change for real to get off this path to make amends. and its so sad because none of that is true! it isn't too late! but lex can't see that.

no shut up because think about. okay how often do you think the captain dreamed of a life after the war. imagine how many nights he would watch the light dim across the countryside and wish for a different life, wish for an identity outside of the military, wish for a companion. normal, domestic things. sleeping in a comfortable bed, going out to eat at a pub, shopping for christmas presents, having a friendly face to share his life with.
and he gets some of that, in the saddest amalgamation of bits and pieces possible. he watches the world move on from a war he gave his whole life to, he watches families come and go from the house he can never escape, he watches the warm bodies of people around him experience normal life the way he never could. and he does have people to share his life with, but it's such a mockery of what it could have been. he has a family he can't interact with, a sense of warmth he can't feel. he's stuck in the costume of a rank he never grew out of, tied irrevocably to an environment that stifled every part of him.
only in death can he be who he has been all along, and the degree to which he gets to enjoy that freedom becomes more and more limited every day. every day he gets further from what he knows, and instead of getting to move on he is physically stunted, caged in a persona that hates him. just.. the fact that he can never be free, he can never change, he can never put the fucking swagger stick down for long enough to know how to live without it. are you listening to me.
how am i supposed to read 60 books a year and write poems and short stories and go on picnics and hang out with my friends and watch movies and travel and work out and explore new hobbies and adopt a cat and journal and go to therapy all while working a full-time jobbbbbb
Here's my cat Berlioz having a little snack! I adopted him yesterday and he's gotten comfortable enough to eat in front of me 💜💜💜
