#wait wait wait wait wait #pls let me explain first #i know that juan rulfo is recognized as a pioneer of magical realism in latin america (thx king)#and i'm not saying pedro paramo is not a magical realism work (though i would argue gothic literature deeply inspired the movement)#but i think it's very repressive to just slap magical realism and call it a day when dealing with such a beautiful work #especially bcs all of the setting of comala IS TEXTBOOK GOTHIC #it may not be victorian creepy haunted house gotic we all know and love but it very obviously is a mexican gothic #the feeling of fear and confusion #the way the past and the present interact and morph until you don't know which is which #THERE ARE GHOSTS #the prerevolutionary setting of a ghost town stuck in time #the nonlinear and almost convoluted narrative #horror as a way to represent social and psychological issues #AND IT'S ALSO A GOTHIC ROMANCE BTW #especially when talking about pedro and his relationship to susana and women in general #i mean you could call it sub textual but it is very much textual to me #look these are the worst people you will ever meet and they are in a constant struggle of class/identity/love/sexuality/hate/power #and it leads to their ruin!!! isn't that fun??? the intensity of their emotions and their inability to deal with it is their ruin!!! yippie #the moral corruption of society represented in the corruption of a man obsessed with his past love is just chefs kiss!!!!#and of course it's not only gothic and not only magical realism #it can be lowkey a comedy at times #it's obviously historic with it being set during the mexican revolution and the mexican industrial boom #it's one of the best tragedies ever told #it's a bitter critic to mexican society/feudalism/pre and post revolutionarism/capitalism/the mexican macho #it's beautifully written and poetic yet still keeps it's grounded narrative #but it never gets introduced into the discussion of gothic literature bcs i guess finding translated books is too difficult for some people #THIS IS YOUR SIGN TO READ PEDRO PARAMO BTW #READ PEDRO PARAMO #IT'S AN ORDER #pedro paramo
