Review: Walking Through Walls’s newest indie single ‘I Was Thinking Of Ways To Tell You’ tells a relatable story of breaking a heart and making mistakes
The Chelmsford-based two piece known as Walking Through Walls take inspiration from an array of artists like The 1975, Inhaler, and Sam Fender, appealing to audiences across the board whilst bearing their own distinctly styled songwriting on their sleeve for songs you won’t forget anytime soon. With their previous singles receiving plays on BBC Introducing in Essex and an array of live shows that have left these artists equally impressive on the stage as well as in the studio, it’s without a doubt that Walking Through Walls are a pair with a vast amount of potential to come. Now sharing one of their greatest releases to date, Walking Through Walls’ newest offering ‘I Was Thinking Of Ways To Tell You’ showcases everything they’ve learned over the years and more.
Whimsical and bright, there’s no doubt that from the moment you press play on ‘I Was Thinking Of Ways To Tell You’ you’ll feel utterly enchanted by Walking Through Walls’ easy-going blissful sound. Deeply enriched in an opening synth-flourish before fading into a distinct plodding bassline, delicate guitar strums and neatly wrapped in a steady thudding drum beat, the opening verse is slow but easy to bounce along to, urging you get into the up-tempo tone or lyrical hooks you’ll be picking up and singing along to on a first listen without a doubt. The chorus pops into colour as re-introduced synth twinkles sees the track soaring as every other instrumental picks up at a higher more impactful volume for a moment you’ll find yourself relating your own youthful experiences to. Their vocalist dances around the hazily clouded ambience of the release with a low and high toned interweaved mesh of vocals, slotting breezily into the vibrant bedding of ‘I Was Thinking Of Ways To Tell You’ while adding an edge of richness and emotion to every line. A saxophone solo in the bridge adds a jazz-esque flair to what’s already a masterpiece of a single, with Walking Through Walls’ keeping you on your toes for every moment of the release and its constant evolution, truly marking this hidden gem to surely just being the beginning for a band with so much potential to come.
Lyrically, ‘I Was Thinking Of Ways To Tell You’ feels like a post-breakup song trying to make sense of the damage, come to terms with the heartbreak and cope through the aftermath. Admitting their mistakes and evidently buried in a sense of guilt, as well as the loss of their partner, the journey is one that aptly captures the embodiment of being young and learning - even if that learning comes with things crashing down. As the protagonist reflects within lines like ‘we’re fighting over something it was never about’, it feels the relationship in question is one that became a little doomed, as arguments delved into smaller, minor frustrations to avoid dealing with the looming larger issues. Taking a sense of accountability, Walking Through Walls admit that ‘I’m sorry that I wasn’t better’, owning a sense of responsibility for the relationship’s downfall and feeling regretful of their behaviour. Longing to see them one more time, lyrics like ‘I was looking for your face but there was no one about’ seem to show that regardless of being at fault, they yearn for things to be repairable but know deep down the relationship has come to a close, attempting to let go while still held up on the past. Though tinged in an aching heart and a nostalgic hum, ‘I Was Thinking Of Ways To Tell You’ remains oddly airy feeling, contrasting its words and advocating for more of a healthy post-breakup progression between the lines.
Check out ‘I Was Thinking Of Ways To Tell You’ for yourself here to enjoy Walking Through Walls’ catchy indie soundscape and all-too-relatable story of breaking a heart and making mistakes.

In Memoriam Truth. I love this mixed media painting from my 2011 exhibition Walking Through Walks. 9 separate paintings together form this one painting. Silkscreens of vintage Halloween masks, painted wallflowers and portraits come together, exploring how we all live through life trying to define our existence and discover our personal truths. #walkingthroughwalls #truth #veritas #emet #garybaseman #baseman Scroll through to see details from the nine individual paintings. https://www.instagram.com/p/CGVh34CnAAF/?igshid=1riv7jzjvb6e1
Genesis of Dream Reality. On Saturday night, I met @joshgroban who owns this painting from my NYC EXHIBITION, Walking Through Walls. And after the tragic passing of Kobe and his daughter, you can’t help to take a step back and take perspective of things. Walking through Walls theme was about breaking through boundaries in society and the art world, together with the ideal of our personal truth and mortality. #walkingthroughwalls #toby #tobylovesyou #tobystravels #garybaseman #baseman In this short time on earth, how do we break down the expectations of others and society, to discover and accept out authentic self, and share this beauty with the world to make it a better place. https://www.instagram.com/p/B71Lg84nA5F/?igshid=9xdbk8a70j5u
