The founder of the night riders was Anhel a Therul, born when Therul was a city, not a lineage. As she fled the city, her group of refugees stumbled into a dead grove, and most were torn down. She escaped with a few others, but her leg was bitten and bleeding. They tried to send her away, but she took her only weapon, a butcher’s knife, and chopped off her wounded leg, just below the knee.
Stunned, the others bound her wound and took her with them, and she did not succumb to the wound. She reached Emul Isle, and joined the mounted guard despite all protests that she would not be able. Her skill on horseback and in battle, and her legendary fearlessness, brought her to the attention of Lord dEmul.
He commented at dinner that, if she were not a woman, and so young besides, he would give her her own squadron. His wife (originally from the city Therul herself) promptly declared Anhel a Therul squad captain, knight, and first of her line, and told her lord that if he disagreed, she would divorce him immediately.
Sir Anhel a Therul had her new squad the next day, and was brought before the Lord the day after that, to answer the bizarre rumors that she meant to ride her squad by night.
“Daylight did not save my leg,” she told Lord dEmul, “but a swift horse and sharp cleaver saved my life. See that my squad has good hoses and weapons and we will never fear the darkness.”
“Perhaps the darkness will come to fear you,” he said, and gave her squad the best horses from his own stable and free reign in the armory whenever they wished.

And can I mention that the credit track for Ratatouille is called "End Creditouilles"? Perfect.
