Gold didn't even register what the announcer was saying as he walked onto his side of the field. His mind was elsewhere, expression an uncharacteristic frown as his thoughts strayed to Green, to Vee, to his last battle and what had happened at the end of it.
He'd won. People were supposed to be happy when they won. Gold had lost many battles before, but that had never felt as bad as yesterday's victory. Everything was wrong. This wasn't fun anymore.
The field was revealed and the countdown started, and Gold reached for his pokéballs. His hand brushed against Bubbles' ball and lingered there for a moment. She'd be the perfect choice for a marsh field such as this...
He made his choice, plucking two balls off his belt and tossing them onto the field. There was a bright flash of light and Scarlet materialised, her unusual iridescent red scales glinting menacingly in the sun as she stared down the Togetic and Minun their opponent just sent out. On a spot of solid ground next to her, Twigsy appeared.
As tempted as he was to just quit the fight, he owed it to Green, and his team, to do his best, and do his best he would.
The music started, and with it the battle. Gold's opponent gave her instructions, but Gold paid her no mind, focussed on his own commands instead. "Twigsy, Bulldoze and Earthquake on the ground! Scarlet, Waterfall!"
The Sudowoodo obeyed without hesitation, lifting one foot and bringing it down, making the earth shake and vibrate with the force of the impact. His Gyarados teammate lifted herself up off the ground just in time not to feel the effects of the attack as it spread through the entire field.
Neither move would do much damage on such a muddy field, but damage wasn't Gold's intention. Instead the landscape of the field began to change. Its power enhanced by the Earthquake, allowing it to reach much farther, much deeper than it normally would, the Bulldoze compressed the earth, solidified it. All moisture was squeezed from the mud like water from a sponge, gathering on the surface while the earth beneath rearranged itself into solid ground.
Instead of flooding the field though, the water rose into the air in giant pillars as if being sucked up by an invisible force. Three, no five- nine such fountains soon erupted all over the field as the red Gyarados acted on her trainer's order, one even catching the opponent Minun off guard and sending them flying up into the sky.
Sure, Bubbles' mastery over water moves may have been impressive, but the Furret was no water type. Scarlet was, and her control over the element was only strengthened by the Mystic Water pendant around her neck.
With the water now trapped in a cycle of being lifted up and then falling back down only to start anew for as long as the Waterfall move was active, her work was almost done. Both the newly solidified floor and her teammate would stay dry as long as she kept up the move.
With a mighty roar to augment her performance, she focussed on the pendant around her neck, relinquishing control over the move until the energy contained in the Mystic Water, normally only used to enhance, was the only thing powering the Waterfall, giving the Gyarados free rein to act without having to concentrate on holding up the fountains.
With that, the stage was set.
