Hongbin had not intended to come to the gala. He had intended to stay late into the night to work on a rape case, hoping to get some DNA off of the victim’s clothes that could lead to the assailant. However, his plans had changed when his superior had barged into the lab, pulled him into the hallway, locked the door and handed him a ticket to the gala. “You work too much, go have some fun,” the man had told him, clapping him on the shoulder.
So, unable to argue, he had gone home, put on the simple suit he still had from a conference he had went to during university, and made his way to city hall. It felt strange, entering the ballroom. He had been in the city for months, but he felt like he hardly knew anyone. He really did work too much, didn’t he? He was starting to waver, to feel like maybe he should just leave and retreat to the comfort of home, when he spotted a familiar face tucked over by the wall.
“Leo! You’re here!” He could not keep the relief out of his voice, a smile lighting up his face. “I’m kind of surprised, but I’m glad-- I know basically no one else here.”
