Malicious Wallpapers Hiding on Steam

Security researchers have identified dozens of malicious wallpapers distributed through Steam Workshop for Wallpaper Engine. The wallpapers appeared harmless on the surface, but some contained hidden scripts designed to download and run additional malware on users' systems.

According to the investigation, the campaign relied on obfuscated code that made the malicious behavior difficult to spot. Once activated, the wallpapers could retrieve payloads from external servers, potentially exposing affected users to a range of threats beyond the initial download. The wallpapers were uploaded by multiple accounts and managed to remain available long enough to attract significant attention before being reported.

Researchers noted that modding platforms and community content hubs have become increasingly attractive targets for attackers. Because users often expect custom content to include scripts or unusual files, malicious uploads can blend in more easily than they would on traditional software distribution platforms.

Thoughts:

Custom content has always involved a certain amount of trust, and stories like this are a reminder that even something as simple as a wallpaper can be more complicated than it looks. Most people worry about suspicious programs, not the background image sitting on their desktop.

Normally the wallpapers I make that I personally really love don't get as much traction, so it surprised me to check up on the Dawn one and see THIS!!!!!!??????

Meanwhile my most popular (I think?) is my Genm wallpaper with over 500 subscribers and this one in comparision is so boring, although I of course still like it! But like my others way more that barely have any subscribers :O
