Kimberley Walsh: 5 Minute Philosopher - Stylist Magazine - 4 August 2015
The meaning of life in 22 probing questions.
What will singer Kimberley Walsh make of our existential questions?
What is the meaning of life? Family. When you take everything away, it’s the one thing you would not want to be alive on this earth without. What is the difference between right and wrong? The lines can be blurred. You generally know the difference and occasionally get things wrong but as long as you learn something it can be made into a positive. Is it easier to love or be loved? I have so much love to give so it’s easy to do that. To be loved is slightly more difficult because it’s subjective. Somebody could stop loving you at any time… What is true happiness? I’m going to be selfish and say lying by a pool with a cocktail in the sun. Nature or nurture? After watching Bobby [her 10-month-old son] grow up I can see so many little things he’s inherited – he’s stubborn like his dad and rubs his feet together, which I’ve always done. But I’ve also realised that the way you decide to bring them up absolutely has an impact too. Is it more important to be liked or respected? To be liked. It means you’re a good person. Respect comes with that. What would you want as your epitaph? That I was a good mum. My mum was such a good mum, I often wonder if my kids will think as much of me as I have of her. Who or what is your greatest love? Bobby. When did you last lie? Last night I lost the TV remote and Justin [Scott, Kimberley’s fiancé] said: “You must be sat on it” but I was sure I wasn’t. When he left the room, I realised I was so I hid it under his cushion! He instantly knew what I’d done. Does the supernatural exist? No. I’m quite a realist. Are you fatalistic? Yes. What is your greatest fear? I don’t have phobias. I’m just scared of other people; what they can do. I’m a worrier. I want everyone to be all right all the time, but you can’t control that. Animals or babies? Definitely babies. I’m that woman who doesn’t really like animals. What is your happy place? Pottering around at home. I’m a real homebody. If you could be remembered for one thing what would it be? My wallpapering skills [laughs]. I’m a really good decorator and wallpapered most of the rooms in my house. That’s a good thing to leave behind. What talent do you yearn for? I wish I could play the piano. My mum used to try and teach me but we used to fall out. Now I think, what a missed opportunity. Do you like to be complimented? With maturity you learn to take them. It’s awful if you know someone’s lying though, which as you can imagine, we get a lot in this industry. Do you have a high pain threshold? I can withstand quite a lot of pain. I broke my wrist when I was pregnant and was alright with it. What book do you recommend most to others? Can I say a cookbook? The Leon book is amazing. There’s a spicy coconut seabass recipe I’m always telling people to try. If food was an emotion, what would it be? Happiness! I love to eat. Which lesson has been the hardest to learn? Motherhood. There’s a million books out there but no lessons can prepare you for what’s coming. Everything else I’ve ever done I could prepare for. Quinoa or Quavers? You can’t beat a good pack of Quavers. Kimberley is in Sweet Charity at Cadogan Hall 19-22 August, cadoganhall.com WORDS: HELEN BOWNASS Stylist Magazine.
