I keep forgetting to post here…

Recently, an exhibit on Pili budaixi (glove puppetry) opened at the Taiwan Culture Center in Tokyo on June 20, 2024. It’ll last until July 29th; note, though, that it’s only open on weekdays.

It’s not a very big exhibit, and the info is all in Japanese. But it’s a rare chance to see the official puppets of Shang Bu Huan, Lin Xue Ya, and Dan Fei — and not just any official version of the puppets, but rather, the main ones.

That’s right — we’re talking not their stunt-double puppets or official replicas meant for most exhibits/events, but rather, the main puppets they used for filming!

The three characters’ Takarazuka costumes and props are also on display, but photos of those aren’t allowed. (You can take pics of the puppets, though!)

It might take me some time to cross-post over here everything I already posted to Twitter, if at all, but I got to attend two special events in conjunction with this exhibit: a panel on opening day, and a fan event earlier, on the 22nd.

Again, I’m more active on Twitter because it really is easier to post in real time over there, and it’s not considered spamming to be posting so much because you’re updating a thread. So, I might not be able to post much here… Plus, I’ll be busy for most of next week.

But before I go to sleep, I think some of you Thunderbolt Fantasy fans over here might enjoy seeing my vids from this weekend’s event. Let me share one first; the rest will maybe follow.

Two of Pili’s veteran puppeteers guested at this event, which consisted of a combination of pre-planned puppet performances and requests from the audience.

To my delight, one of the fans who got picked to make a request asked to see Shang Bu Huan and Wan Jun Po’s adventure era, and, well… this is what the puppeteers came up with on the spot!

Xi You Squad Dads Week: A Father’s Day Event in Honor of Thunderbolt Fantasy’s Shang Bu Huan and Wan Jun Po

This started out as a brainfart on Twitter, but after some anxiety/fretting, I’ve realized that I have nothing to lose in making this happen! The Thunderbolt Fantasy fandom is small, so I shouldn’t hold it to the same standards for events for larger fandoms. I mean, if even just one other person besides myself contributes to this, can it really be a failure/flop if it means we get new fan content?

Anyway, this International Father’s Day 2021 (June 20), I plan to honor TBF’s long-suffering father figures Shang Bu Huan (Sho Fukan) and Wan Jun Po (Ban Gunha), and I invite you to join me! The hashtag event will be mainly on Twitter, but I’d like to reach out to the TBF fans here as well. Details behind the cut, both in graphic form and in text!

What It's All About

Giving the perpetually exhausted father figures of Thunderbolt Fantasy — Shang Bu Huan (Sho Fukan) and Wan Jun Po (Ban Gunha) the appreciation, love, and happiness they deserve on International Father's Day (the third Sunday of June — June 20, 2021 — in several countries)!

How to Join

From June 12 (Sat) to 20 (Sun), 2021 in your timezone, wherever you are in the world, simply post/link to a tribute to Shang Bu Huan and/or Wan Jun Po on Twitter, and hashtag it with #XiYouSquadDadsWeek.

The hashtag event will be mainly on Twitter. (There will, however, be an AO3 collection for fics — it opens midnight GMT+9 on Sat, Jun 12.)

Not on Twitter? You can post to any other social network, like here — just use the same hashtag so us fans can search for your tribute!

FAQs

Should my tribute be to both Shang and Jun Po?

A: No. You can celebrate one or both of them.

Should my tribute focus on Shang &/or Jun Po being happy?

A: As much as possible, yes, but if you find yourself inspired to create something angsty/bittersweet instead, no problem — it happens!

Should I do something gen? Is it OK if I ship them?

A: Whatever works for you — gen or shipping; either is fine!

Is NSFW okay?

A: Yes; please just tag appropriately! (Depending where you post, of course... if you’re posting here on Tumblr, it might get taken down...)

No timezone restrictions as long as we post anytime between June 12–20 in our timezone? Really?

A: Yes, really, because TBF fans (especially the EN-speaking side of the fandom) are scattered all over the world! So long as it's already June 12 / still June 20 somewhere in the world, feel free to post something.

Is it OK to post a tribute in another language?

A: Yes! No need to post in English. The organizer was actually hoping that Japanese and Taiwanese fans would be interested too, but was not able to gauge enough interest. Regardless of language, please use the #XiYouSquadDadsWeek hashtag if you're participating, so us fans can see your wonderful tribute!

Isn't Taiwan's Father's Day on August 8th?

A: Yes. However, as most of those who are interested in this event are from countries where Father's Day is celebrated on the third Sunday of June, this event will be held to coincide with International Father's Day instead.

But should there be enough interest, the organizer would be happy to do this again around the week of August 8th — hopefully in collaboration with the Taiwanese side of the fandom! (Or maybe even celebrating all of TBF's dads, including Azibelpher, once we get 100% confirmation that he’s Lang's father...)

Inspired by a thing that actually happened in my other fandom (Good Omens — here’s the original thread for reference), I made a thing for all the Gunha-dono lovers out there. 

If Twitter (not just the EN fandom, but also the Japanese and Taiwanese fans) and the Discord that I’m part of (which started calling him “Daddy Centipede,” eventually shortened to “Centidaddy”) are any indication, he’s pretty much S3′s breakout character/ensemble darkhorse. I, too, am madly in love with him!
