Somewhere only we know review :)
Today I finally went to see the movie 有一个地方只有我们知道.. I briefly saw them film while I was in Prague, so it almost feels surreal to be watching the movie. The movie beautifully embraces the art of loving and letting go, living in the present, learning how to forgive and forget, as well as learning how to believe again. Zeyang's character is very unique, he's a young single father who's the head of his family, a lot of people rely on him so he always tries his best just for their sake, but end up falling in love at first sight. Even though the relationship dynamic in the movie is a younger boyfriend and an older girlfriend, they're equals. While he takes the lead and eventually becomes someone she relies on, she's also his rock and is there to support him when times get tough. I was surrounded by couples and families, and there were 3 particular scenes that made people cry. I don't wanna spoil too much, but honestly the character developments, the lines, the lessons we learn through the characters etc really left a deep impression. At one point, Zeyang says something along the lines of "love doesn't always happen to two single people, we don't have the choice to pick the 'right' one." and that made me tear a bit because I can relate hehe, and another particular scene (one of my favorites) is when she meets her ex-fiancé and admits that she stopped hating him a long time ago, and he tells her that he will always be there for her even if things between them didn't work out. She tells him that if it wasn't for him being a bastard(lol), she probably wouldn't have known Prague was such a beautiful place, and how many things in the world she had yet to see. That scene really showed how the past really shapes us into who we are and have an impact on the decisions we make, and while one door closes, not all hope is lost. Another line that stuck through me was when Jintian said "If I dont let go, tomorrow will never come." ;__; Jintian's character is also loveable, she's insecure because of the things that happened, and her life was always about very few people so when hope was lost for her, she decided to take a leap at faith in a new place, to become a new person.
The story line between the grandma and Josef Novak was also a tear-jerker, if you think about it, meeting the right person, experiencing the right kind of love, at the perfect place - but at the wrong time.. what would you do? Would you wait? Even if it's impossible, would you still stay true to your promise? Zeyang's family also deals with a lot, and depression is embraced tastefully. Zeyang lives in the present, he doesn't worry about the future but he takes one step at a time. His mother at one point said to him "do you really think if you don't think about it, the future will never come?". That's when Zeyang realizes that the future will eventually come around, and there will be decisions to make that could make it or break it. There were quite a few sad moments, but also had some good laughs watching this movie. I feel like I realized a lot of things today.. could relate to a lot of the things happening in the movie, and it was just tugging at my heart strings.
Before the ending credits there was a message that said, "Sometimes the things that we think will last forever might disappear within the blink of an eye, so hug the person next to you". and after that I found out that this movie was dedicated to XJL's grandma and instantly wanted to cry again. lol
Kris' acting surprised me, you can tell he's a rookie, but for someone acting for the first time and in a lead role at that, he really impressed me. He emotes well, although he hasn't 100% let go of himself to fully express some emotions, he made me forget about Kris Wu Yifan, but made me believe in Zeyang and the story on the screen. The songs in this movie were all really good, so I can't wait to get studio versions ^^
My favorite parts of this was of course watching zeyang-jintian, luoji-shanshan fall in love, but also how characters learn to move on after finding closure, how sometimes things that you thought would last forever isn't always gonna happen - but that doesn't mean you should keep yourself from pursueing happiness. Some people might turn to religion to have something to believe in, because the things that they previously believed in might be lost, but that doesn't mean they aren't aware that prayers won't undo what has already been done. I also learned that sometimes... Knowing that the love you had was real is enough, and that's all you need.
